A Glorious Companion to Grammy-winning Blackwood Tribute,
By Ann Smith (Houston, Texas) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 20th Century Gospel: From Hymns to Blackwood Brothers Tribute to Christian Country (Audio CD)
This CD is the perfect follow-up to their Grammy winning "We Called Him Mr. Gospel Music". A glorious musical achievement for this or any other year, Art Greenhaw and his music mates have created some of the most memorable sounds ever ---with songs like "Gospel Woman". I won't give the song away, but one listen to it, and you'll be searching, searching, searching for your very own Gospel Woman. Let's hope we find her! The Jordanaires are here reminiscent of their very finest work with Elvis, as they sing and doo-wap as the perfect compliment to the rich and warm baritone vocals of Greenhaw. And Greenhaw's the perfect lead for the Jordanaires. It's a match made in heaven, and it's 1960s pop magic all over again, it's Jim Reeves, it's Elvis, it's Ricky Nelson, it's the best of progressive country-gospel as these gospel gems become magic, magic in the hands of the singers, the Jordanaires and Art. And what an addition the new face in the spotlight is: it's Nokie Edwards of The Ventures :Les Paul, Chet Atkins and Scotty Moore all rolled into one. Nokie and his band, The Ventures, are like the equivalent of the Beatles all over Japan. What will happen when the Japanese people hear this American brand of country and classic gospel? I think they'll go nuts, and it'll be Beatlemania and Venturemania all over again! I think there will be Japanese "gospel rock" and gospel country tours bringing out all the guitar bands trying to copy and emulate this American, superstar sound.Along with the better-than-ever Jordanaires---and thanks to Greenhaw Records for mixing and recording the group the best ever---listeners of this CD are treated to the power singing of James Blackwood, the singer Art has called the greatest lead singer in gospel history. And on top of this, the gospel instrumental arrangements of American hymns and patriotic sacred classics are unique and outstanding. Maybe the greatest yet in the series of masterpieces from the little indie record label from Texas. Fans, get this CD, and be first in line to experience the innovation of the best gospel label of the 21st century---paying tribute to the greatest sounds of the 20th century. This CD is an instant classic, one destined for the halls of fame of recording science. What a wonderful world of classic gospel and country gospel music with sprinkling of classic rock ---and filled with the greatest vocals this side of heaven. Watch for these classic songs in the next movie such as "The Apostle" of a few years back.
