5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Music, Superlative Performances, June 14, 2000

This review is from: 20th Century Guitar 1 (Audio CD)
This is an excellent program, beautifully planned & played, of 20th century guitar music. Over its 65 minute running time, there's a good balance between "light" (though never trivial) pieces & more challenging ones. I got the CD for Frank Martin's sole piece for solo guitar, the Four Short Pieces (originally titled, aptly enough, Guitare) & have really enjoyed getting to know the other works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Landmark recordings of 20th century repertoire, October 25, 2006

Born in London in 1933, Julian Bream recently retired from actively touring and performing. This CD is a reissue of landmark recordings made for RCA between 1959-73. During this time, few guitarists were more compelling champions of new music than Bream. All the music in this CD is today firmly established within the standard guitar repertoire.

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest 20th century guitar recording I've heard, April 18, 2006

Bream is, without question, among the greats of the guitar. This is, in my opinion, a collection that shows why he very well may be the greatest interpreter of 20th century music for the guitar. Bream's natural musicality - his sense of phrasing, vibrato, and color - shine through in all these pieces. To me, the highlights are the Martin pieces, the Walton Bagatelles, the Henze, and the Rawsthorne Elegy. Needless to say, that's most of the recording, and the other pieces are certainly beautifully done as well.

This recording is tragically hard to find - if you see it, don't wait, get it!
