5.0 out of 5 stars What does everyone want, a free ride?
This album is a steal at Amazon's price. Every song on the album was a big hit in my generation. I think that this collection of 11 songs is fantastic. The quality of the sound is superb and well remastered. For anyone to be disappointed in this album makes me wonder if they really know ABB. I highly recommend this "Millinium" production. 3.0 out of 5 stars All great songs, but...
These are all excellent songs, but the money you spend on this you should be spending on Beginnings, Live at Fillmore East and Eat A Peach. These three discs have most of these songs plus the rest of the albums which are just as essetial.

3.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC SONGS, BUT GO FOR "DECADE OF HITS" INSTEAD, January 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Best of the Allman Brothers Band (Audio CD)
This CD is one of a series of greatest hits cds that have been released on established acts, including BB King & Lynyrd Skynyrd. As with the others in the series, the song list is rather incomplete. If you are looking for a much better best-of package of the Allman Brothers Band's first classic period, go for "Decade of Hits" instead. You will get an additional 5 songs and a better overall picture of their music for just a couple of more dollars.

If you are not a greatest hits album collector, but are starting your ABB collection, I would begin with "Fillmore Concerts" (2cd enhanced edition of the classic Live at Fillmore East) or "Eat A Peach", both from the early 1970s. "Mycology" is another excellent "hits" compilation that covers much of the ABB's second classic period of the 1990s and is a great value, also.

4.0 out of 5 stars Equivalent of a Reader's Digest Condensed Version, April 16, 2000
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Best of the Allman Brothers Band (Audio CD)
I read where someone once referred to the Internet as "an ocean of spit one inch deep." I have similar feelings about these 20th Century Masters releases. Not that these aren't quality recordings--the music here is 5-star material. But there's no depth to these artists' repackagings. These are artists that any music fan should have in their collection: Chuck Berry, The Who, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Lynyrd Skynyrd, etc. But if these releases are intended to be definitive, why are they so skimpy? Most of these clock in at between 30 to 45 minutes in length. Why is MCA limiting these CDs to 10 or 12 tracks? These songs are already sitting in the studio's vaults. If the record company is serious about meeting consumer needs--and by that I mean providing career restrospectives for casual fans--let's start putting 75 minutes of music on these releases or stick with the collections already out there (Decade of Hits, Mycology, in the case of the ALlman Brothers).

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Band, Great Music, Great Ripoff., January 14, 2004

This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Best of the Allman Brothers Band (Audio CD)
I first fell in love with the Allman Brothers Band when "At Fillmore East" was first released. I thought it was one of the most incredible live albums I had ever heard, and I still think so today, all these years later. "Eat A Peach" was darned near as good. This is simply one fine band. So based upon the music, I can't complain at all about this CD. But I'm afraid I have to mirror the opinions of most of the others who have reviewed this release-- it's far too short and offers far too little from a band that deserves much better representation. Simply put, why would anyone buy this CD when so many other superior releases are out there for close to the same price? As others have noted, MCA has released a whole series of these so-called "Mellennium Collection" discs, and every one of them is a ripoff. They should be ashamed. With all of the music the artists represented in this series have released, why would MCA choose such a consistently skimpy selection on all of these discs? I can only assume that they want to offer a brief introductory sampler for prospective new fans without cutting into sales of the other albums. If that's the case, fine. But if you're going to offer a sampler disc with only a half hour of music on it, then price it accordingly. With this meager selection, fine though the individual selections may be, I think around five or six bucks would be more appropriate. If you really want to learn about this band, spring for any one of the first five or six albums (for a particularly good value, pick up "Beginnings" which combines the first two albums, each also sold separately, onto one CD). All are excellent, reasonably priced, and a much better value for the money spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars 20th Century Masters: The Best of the Allman Brothers Band, November 27, 2010

This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Best of the Allman Brothers Band (Audio CD)
I find most all reviews on this series (20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection) which they are after all. The intent "I" have which most people commenting on these CD's seem to glaze over is; I or other people may be a collector of the series, (not that there is anything WRONG with that). There must be more like minded people like me out there!

I found the sound, and the tracks on the CD very good. My only qualm with this series is that they used to come in "Jewel Case" now most have switched to "Eco-friendly" packaging and dropped all liner notes. The Eco-friendly packaging is totally inadequate as after a couple of opening and closing of the CD, it tends to fall apart, and your left with having to buy a jewel case to put them in, which is far more superior, lasts longer and stands up to more vigorous use. When you have to buy another case then you are defeating the intent of being "Eco" (Green) friendly when there's more waste in the end!!!

Otherwise the music is just great for the beginner or as a collector. We should all take this into consideration.

Last but not least we are consumers, we have choices and sometimes we have to make them prior to purchasing a CD or other product!

As with all of the Millennium Collections this hardly does any justice to the Allman Brothers music legacy. But I picked this up at Best Buy on sale for $6.99. If you are a casual fan and want a good sampling of the TABB music to see if you are interested in picking up a more comprehensive collection then this album is for you. This album contains most of their hits and radio staples. This is a good cheap album to put in your collection.

Okay, first off whoever said that Stand Back was a better cut then...oh, I dont know, Ain't Wastin' Time No More or One Way Out? Where are Trouble No More, It's Not My Cross to Bear, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Hoochie Coochie Man, Ain't Wastin' Time, Little Martha, One Way Out and Statesboro f@$%!#ing blues? Hell, even Wasted Words would be a better pick than Ramblin' Man, for instance!
Okay, I'm being a little harsh. It does have Dreams, Whipping Post, Revival, Midnight Rider, Hot 'Lanta and Melissa. But this should be avoided. In fact, I wouldn't recommend any Allmans comp and instead say this: pick up the first four albums (Allman Brothers Band, Idlewild South, At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach)--all the Allmans one really needs, in my mind.
