Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Muddy Waters's entry in MCA's 20th Century Masters is as good as the budget-minded series gets. True, it's a little lacking in the amount of material--just 12 tracks over the span of 32 minutes--but every one of these songs is a stone blues classic. The set is well focused, too, sticking with some of the great singles Waters recorded for the Chess label between 1951 and 1956--"I Just Want to Make Love to You," "Mannish Boy," "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man," "Got My Mojo Working," and other tunes that are the very cornerstone of Chicago blues. There are other worthy Waters collections covering roughly the same period, notably His Best 1947-55, but this set is fine, too. It's short, yes, but very, very sweet. --Daniel Durchholz

1.0 out of 5 stars A useless collection, September 14, 2010
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Best Of Muddy Waters (Millennium Collection) (Audio CD)
I'll make this one quick.

'20th Century Masters' has a few standout releases. Notice those: A FEW. This is not one of them. Muddy Waters is a legend, and to condense his career with the Chess label in just 11 songs, ESPECIALLY with at least 30 compilations that are better. Yes, what's here is great, but it's what's missing that's the problem. 'You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had,' 'You Shook Me,' 'Sad Letter Blues,' 'She's Alright,' and countless others aren't here when they should be.

They completely screwed up B.B. King's edition, and Howlin' Wolf's isn't much better, but Muddy's edition is the absolute worst. Go buy both volumes of 'His Best.' Or 'The Anthology 1947-1972.' ANYTHING except this. This is unnecessary. I don't recommend this collection at all. It's MCA trying to cash in Muddy's name. This isn't even recommended as a starting point. Only recommended if you can find it for $0.01 in a bargain or cut-out bin.

NOT RECOMMENDED.

Pales in comparison to the recent "His Best" series. Skimpy content.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent down home Delta Blues, February 22, 2002

This is an excellent sampler of this artists work. What is wrong with these previous reviewers rating the cd one and two stars because of lack of content? This isn't an anthology or a boxed set, it is a way to taste the wares to see if you want to spend bigger bucks for a more detailed collection. Don't shy away from this cd the remastering is amazing considering some of this stuff was recorded in the fifties. Excellent value.
