5.0 out of 5 stars Standing on The Top
Rick James is know for his mix of Funk R&B with a little bit of Rock and you get it all here in the CD Rick when he was at his best was one the best at making music. The only song missing from this CD is Standing on the Top. A must have CD*****

I ordered this CD because I heard Super Freak on a commercial and I liked the beat. When I got CD I knew I had made a mistake by just looking at the inside artwork. There was Rick James licking a leg of one of his singers. The lyrics only substantiated the picture and I actually found a perfect place to store my new CD, in the trash with the rest of my trash!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars King of Funk, November 7, 2007
Rick James is truly Missed. Man the Brother was Soulful and a down to earth Soul Brother. He whipped on that Purple Elf,but the Elf got all the glory, but he couldn't hang with no Rick James. Rick James never threaten any of his fan sites or sued fans,etc.... Rick Brought the funk and the fans loved it and still do. Mary Jane is still so fly. give it to me baby, dance wit me, cold blooded, and so many other jams on here that speak on the Greatness that is Rick James's music. Rick always kept it real and never went out like a turkey. strong songwriter, Producer, arranger and opera style vocals that still hit home. Rick was a powerful stylish Musical Icon and left so many timeless songs. the Brother is Missed big time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Past Master, December 6, 2011
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: The Best of Rick James (Audio CD)
I know that music can make for strange bedfellows, but when I read that Rick James was once in a group with NEIL YOUNG, well, I gotta admit my curiosity was piqued. Unfortunately, little or nothing of their band's (the Mynah Birds) recorded output has ever been released, but I'd certainly check it out. I mean, in terms of Rick James collaborations, well, you can understand Teena Marie, the Temptations or Smokey Robinson, but Neil Young?? Someday, somehow I gotta hear that, uh, stuff. I mean, what's it like? "Superfreak In the Sand"??

"Superfreak" was my introduction to Rick James' music, and like most everyone else on the planet, I thought it was pretty darn cool. But I will admit that the first time I heard it, I wondered if the singer wasn't Tim Curry. Yes, that's right. So shoot me! But you gotta admit, that if they'd if ever done a black ROCKY HORROR SHOW, Rick James would have made a great Dr. Frank'n'furter--at least vocally (no idea if he could act). He's probably the only singer I've ever heard who can "out-leer" the Divine Mr. C.

That track is also Rick James at his absolute tightest. This 20th Century Master collection concentrates much more on James' ambling shambling urban funk--which is also quite infectious if you give it a chance. The soul balladeering ain't bad either--especially the elegant duet ("Ebony Eyes")with the Smokey Robinson. James was a cat with more than one trick up his sleeve--not that cats really have sleeves.

Seriously though, this is as good an intro to Rick James oeuvre as you're gonna get. Most of it cooks...at a slower boil than "Superfreak" would suggest. Most of these tracks have a more sinuous groove. But it's all good.
