4.0 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Looking For
I wanted the big hits, at a budget price. This disc delivers. It has all the hits I wanted (Hang On Loosely, Caught Up In You, Fantasy Girl, Rockin' Into The Night, Wild Eyed Southern Boys). And all of the songs that were new to me are solid, too, no filler in this collection. Couldn't ask for more!

3.0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Decent Group
38 Special is a pleasantly surprising good group. It's hard to really classify their brand of rock, because although it has some Southern Rock influence, it has elements of pop in it is as well....And just as a little tidbit of information, this group hails from Jacksonville, FL and the lead singer is the brother of the late Ronnie Van Zandt (of Lynyrd Skynyrd). I would...

5.0 out of 5 stars All Of 38's Hits On 1 Disc, October 4, 2002

This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
.38 Special combine a whole bunch of influences- from Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, and the Outlaws, to Tom Petty, Bob Seger, and Foreigner. Here you get all of their radio hits on 1 disc or cassette. And the versions of the inspirational "Stone Cold Believer" and "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" are the originals, not rare live recordings, making this set preferable to FLASHBACK.

5.0 out of 5 stars "wild-eyed southern boys is outstanding", July 27, 2000
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
This band was made to order for the Millennium Collection of the 20th Century - "38 SPECIAL" holds a unique position in the history of Southern rock. We have some of the best ever - Don Barnes (vocals), Donnie Van Zant (vocals), Jeff Carlisi (guitars), Larry Junstrom (bass), Jack Grondin (drums) and Steve Brookins (drums) these gentlemen became the thinking man's Southern rock band. The quality of song writing was the secret to this hard-working group and why they endured so long over the years. They may be the last Southern rock band cradled by Dixie rock.

It was when the band added arena ready hard rock to its countrified blues rock, they literally shot the lights out. Take for instance - "ROCKIN' INTO THE NIGHT" (1979) - "STONE COLD BELIEVER" (1979) - "WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS" (1981) - "HOLD ON LOOSELY" (1981) - and "FANTASY GIRL" (1981).

Highly recommend this album which features "best of" selections from the most significant music artists of the past century. This CD contains tunes that went "Gold" and "Platinum" - "THE BEST OF 38 SPECIAL" is special for you!

Total Time: 49:54 on 12 Tracks/ A&M Records

5.0 out of 5 stars A Can't Miss CD, July 28, 2000

Any rock fan would be fool to miss this collection. It has all of their greatest hits. It has songs that will make your feet shuffle about in "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" and "Twentieth Century Fox", while mixing in some mellower rock songs like "Fantasy Girl" and "Caught Up In You". Plus, it includes their other big hits such as the ballad "If I'd Been The One" and their all-time greatest hit, "Hold On Loosely." The price also makes this a can't miss for anybody who enjoys hard rock.

38 Special is a pleasantly surprising good group. I would have to say if there was a downside to this group, it is that many of the songs do start sounding the same after awhile. But many of their biggest hits like "Caught Up In You" are worthwhile to check out. Overall they are a talented group that somehow never got as much recognition they deserve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great songs, great sound, great price!, October 29, 2011
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
I know these 20th Century Masters collections have a bad rep, but when you consider the song selection, sound quality and price tag, they're just about perfect for casual fans looking for an introduction to some classic artists. Case in point: this collection of Southern rock band .38 Special.

.38 Special is the kind of band these 20th Century Masters collections are made for. Their brand of AOR-meets-Southern rock (think Survivor meets Skynyrd) was very radio-friendly, and chances are just about every child of the `80s has a favorite .38 Special song or two. Whatever that favorite may be, chances are it's on this disc, from the feel good "Hold On Loosely" to the grooving "Rockin' Into the Night" to the rowdy "Wild Eyed Southern Boys" to the more melodic "Caught Up in You" and "Fantasy Girl."

Serious .38 Special fans will probably find reason to complain about this collection, but they're the ones least likely to need a collection like the 20th Century Masters series in the first place. For casual fans looking for a good-sounding, affordable collection that covers the band's biggest hits, this may be all the .38 Special you need.

5.0 out of 5 stars .38 Special ~20th Century Hits/Millenium Collection, September 7, 2007
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
If your looking for greatest hits collections, the Millenium Collection is one of the finest. I have about four of these CD's featuring different artists and none disappoint. The clarity and detail are great! I am not an overly big fan of .38 Special, but I'm glad I picked it up. There are some really great tracks on this CD

5.0 out of 5 stars 38 Special stomps!, August 17, 2006
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
the guys in this band have a sound with size-12 shoes. if you like this band, I suggest you try the Allman Bros., Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. standout tracks are
Rockin Into the Night, Hold On Loosely, Wild-eyed Southern Boys,
Fantasy Girl, Caught Up In You, If I'd Been The One, Back Where You Belong, and Like No Other Night. the question is: where is this band? it's awesome. they need to make a comeback.
