5.0 out of 5 stars ** The Sounds Of Greatness **, March 16, 2001

With a group like the Dells, you can expect to sit down to fabulous harmony, loving lyrics and go back to a time when people sang about love and life with love in their voices.

EVERY soul group after the Dells, has always listed them as one of their major inspirations, think about Blue Magic, the Chi Lites and even the Delphonics.

This group is still one of the best soul groups ever. You can not help but enjoy this music and become a fan!

For those who appreciate the finer doo wop groups, The Dells are 'Numero Uno'. All their classic hits are on this CD. You cannot like doo wop and not like The Dells. They're the greatest -- and they're still around singing up a storm.

The Dells! This was one great group to listen to when I was in my youth. I loved that song There Is so much I ruined my 45 rpm single listening to it so much. Now I found it in this CD along with many other great songs. This is when music was music and people could listen and dance to songs of Love and inspiration. Not that todays music doesn't all have that. These are sounds of my generation and the people from my era can attest that this music had special meaning. I really enjoy this CD along with the many others of my time I buy from Amazon. If you are from this time then you will definitely love this CD and now I can play There Is over and over without having to worry about scratching it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dells are so under-rated!, April 1, 2009
Too many people don't give The Mighty Dells the credit they deserve! They aren't in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for nothing! They are one of the longest surviving, intact groups whose vocal prowess and harmonies make most of today's groups seem insignificant. These guys sound the same live as on record without all the enhancements! If you love great harmony, soul and R&B, you really need this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Curious Approach To Releases, August 1, 2007

This review is from: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Jewl) (Audio CD)
MCA took a curious approach to their Millenium Collection releases, with some offering 12 selections [e.g., Roger Miller] and others just 11 [Jerry Butler, The Four Tops, and this one as examples].

I believe here they bobbled the ball just a bit. Like contemporary groups such as The Impressions [50 charted R&B singles] and The Miracles [48 charted R&B singles] The Dells were right there with them hit for hit, chalking up 47 themselves between 1956 and 1992 for nine different labels (Vee-Jay, Cadet, Mercury, ABC, 20th Century, Private I, Veteran, Virgin, and Philadelphia Int'l).

However, unlike those groups The Dells only had 21 cross over to the Billboard Hot 100 and just eight make the Top 40 on those Pop charts. The Impressions had 32 Hot 100, putting 17 into the Top 40, while The Miracles, easily the most successful, had 42 Hot 100 hits, 29 of which made the Top 40.

In a series such as this, restricted to 11 or 12 selections, it would be impossible therefore to cover all the major hits of The Impressions and Miracles - but not so where The Dells are concerned. Which leads me to wonder why they did not go to 12 selections and include the only Top 40 hit missing - 1969's Does Anybody Know I'm Here which peaked at # 15 R&B and # 38 Hot 100?

There are a few more nice shots of the group in the insert along with two pages of liner notes by Joseph F. Laredo, but the list of contents, while showing label numbers and, in some instances, the year of release [inconsistent here], they do not reflect chart performances.

Not a bad compilation as these go, but it could have been so mch better with just a little more research and effort.
