Straightforward Singles Collection,
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
Though this set lacks a number of UK and Japanese singles, it's still packed with just about all their best-known tracks. The track progression is chronological, and the only original albums without representation are "Shapes and Patterns" and the recent "Somewhere deep in the night." I guess if you think of SOS as hitmakers or singles artists, this collection will certainly satisfy. If your interest in SOS extends to their lesser-known work, you're better off collecting the original recordings intact. For convenience sake, this CD is a handy sampler to take on trips, or when you're not able to bring along your entire SOS collection. Check out some of the other SOS compilations before you settle on this one...they all have their charms.J

Surrender To Swing Out Sister,
By
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
A marvelous British jazz-pop group from the 80's, Swing Out Sister, led by sultry singer Corinne Drewery, are best known for the bouncy US Top Ten hit, "Breakout." But there's a lot more great songs where that came from, as this Best-Of collection proves. Of course "Breakout" kicks off the disc, but there's many more tasty treats that follow, including "Surrender," "Twilight World," "Waiting Game," "Am I The Same Girl" (SOS's clever re-working of the old Young-Holt Unlimited hit, "Soulful Strut"), "Better Make It Better," and "Who's Been Sleeping." Drewery's voice is smooth & silky, and so is the group's music. Great smooth grooves & snappy tunes from start to finish. Even though their latest albums are only available on Japanese import, I'm glad that Swing Out Sister are still together to this day, 'cause they are GOOD. "The Best Of Swing Out Sister" is a terrific sampling from this classy group.

ecstasy for the ear,

Swing out Sister is one of my favorite band of all time, no doubt about it. Its not only their infectious, addictive jazz grooves on "The Living Return", or the fun 70's pop of "get in touch with yourself". Its more than that. The chemistry in this band is unbelievable, and Corrine Drewery has one of the most unique, jazzy, unmistakable voices ive ever heard. This is a great collection of the band, even though many wont remember who they are in the states. They are definately the US's best kept secrets. They manage to progress and change styles with every album. Its awesome to watch them evolve on every album. This album has all their gems, and not just the radio hits "breakout" and "twilight world". I'm glad they added the songs from my 2 favorite albums by them. If you like this, i highly reccomend "The Living Return". It has to be one of the best jazz/pop records ever.

I enjoyed every song in this cd, even though only 4 of the tracks were popular in Puerto Rico. The interpretation of classical songs like "Am I the same girl" and "La La Means I love you" are great. The orchestration, arrangements and sound in general are very good. The jazzy-pop style of Swing Out Sister makes you move and sing from the beginning to the end. And Corinne's voice is spectacular! I highly recommend this collection to everyone who wants to enjoy good music.

A good chunk of my favorites are on this CD. There's not one bad apple. Every single track just sparkles and shines with glee. This is an excellent representation of Corrine and Andy's work throughout the years. A perfect CD to start off with if you're an SOS newbie.

The sound production of the CD was good but the packaging was all wrong.
The CD cover was broken in a number of places such that it couldn't be used again once opened.

This cd is an older one with the best contributions of these artists. I have enjoyed their music for quite awhile & needed to replace this album because the old one was damaged.

Thanks for this collection! If cd's would wear out like albums used to, my SOS collection would be dust. Every tune on this cd is a gem. Too bad there was not room for more. This group strikes a sensibiity & musicality that seems to really endure. I like practically 99% of their music. What surprises me is how they have been able to be somewhat consistent through the years. What baffles me is how the japanese market has sustained the "import" issues. It is tough to find SOS anywhere in the USA. I bought a mostly instrumental variation on a theme cd/ep (the title was the only vocal) entitled "the big elsewhere" which is a good easy listening cd to go with the collection. This SOS fan needs more of THIS kind of stuff!!!!!!!

What a Great Collection!,

Definately one of the best British bands to come out in a long time, Swing Out Sister was definitely made a great strides in popular music prior to the present age of boy bands and teenage divas. While not widely popular in the United States due to poor marketing by their label, Swing Out Sister produced some of the catchiest, fun songs to be heard in a long time. Lead singer Corrine Drewery and musician Andy Connell became one of the best duet imports from the United Kingdom since the Eurythmics and Everything But The Girl hit our shores. With some great songs such as the catchy "Breakout, I automatically became of this band. In the early 1990s, the group had success with the release of their "Get in Touch with Yourself " album which produced two of the decade's cheerful songs, " Notgonnachange" and "Am I The Same Girl." I had listened to the other songs on the album but was presently surprised to hear their cover of the classic song, "La La Means I Love You," which has been covered by many groups and artists such as Prince and the Jets. "Better Make It Better" also became one of my new favorites due to a great arrangement and Corrine's pleasant voice. I loved this album and am so glad I bought it. I owe several other Swing Out Sister albums, but regardlessly, I wanted this single collection to fill up the void left since the release of their last album in 1992. The good news is that Swing Out Sister is back and have released a new album, "Somewhere Deep In The Night" on March 25, 2002. I am anxiously looking forward to listening to this album and hearing more from this talented duo. This album is a must have for any fans of Brit pop all over the world. |
