THE WETTER THE BETTER!,
By Jukebox Dave (RECORD TOWN, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
WET WILLIE-20th CENTURY MASTERS/MILLENNIUM COLLECTION: One of southern rock's best kept secrets, the blooze/rock/country/gospel/(insert musical genre here) ensemble known as Wet Willie never scaled the commerical heights of their Capricorn label-mates the Allman Brothers or Marshall Tucker...but not for lack of talent! The pleasurable reggae-tinged romper KEEP ON SMILIN' is the only bona fide on this rowdy roundup, but don't let that phase you. Sanctifyin' lead vocal wailer, sax/harp blaster Jimmy Hall gooses these boogie boys through savory STAX-channeled RNB shouters like Otis Redding's frantic SHOUT BAMALAMA and LITTLE MILTON's GRITS AIN'T GROCERIES with authentic soul power. Their own earthy compositions such as instrumental workout RED HOT CHICKEN, twanger-banger DIXIE ROCK, and funk infested stew EVERYTHING THAT 'CHA DO WILL COME BACK TO YOU keeps the party hale 'n hearty. Though they scored a couple of slicker minor hits (STREET CORNER SERENADE, WEEKENDS) a few years later for another record company, GREATEST HITS is still the best place to start Wettin' your appetite for Willie.

Great Anthology Of An Underrated Southern Rock Band,
By
This review is from: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
20TH CENTURY MASTERS is a great anthology by Wet Willie, who were one of the most underrated Southern rock bands of the 70s. Perhaps the reason they never achieved the recognition of such bands as the Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Marshall Tucker Band, the Outlaws, or even Molly Hatchet and Blackfoot, is because unlike those bands, who based their sound on a country-rock-blues hybrid, Wet Willie's sound was heavily rooted in R&B, soul, and even gospel, and featured very little, if any, lead guitar playing. Nevertheless, they were just as good as those bands, and are worth rediscovering.

Would be 5 but missing best song?,

This review is from: 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection (Audio CD)
Wet Willie is an original and a classic, I purchased this album a couple months ago, (from amazon of course) I really like this compilation, however it is missing "Street Corner Serenade" which I think was the best Wet Willie song ever. So that explains the 4 star rating...

The millennium Collection: The Best of Wet Willy is a very good CD. But Dripping Wet is still my favorite.
