About the best "Best of" Simone Album There Is,

I can't believe I'm the first reviewer of this fine collection of work by one of the finest woman singers in jazz, blues, rhythm 'n blues, AND soul. There could never be a true "Best of" single CD. She simply produced too much great stuff. However, as a sampler of how this musician could make magic music that breaks your heart one minute and has you laughing and dancing the next in so many different ways, this is the best you can get.
The only song I don't care for particularly is "Mississippi Goddamn," but so many people I respect love it, I know this is a lack in myself. All the others are tops of their kinds. Nina Simone is a fantastic singer, pianist, arranger, and composer. Words simply fail me in trying to talk about her. Maybe a comparison will do. She's the female Ray Charles, at his very best. Yes, really. Get this album and learn why. |
