SERIOUSLY FUNKED UP!,

This is one funked up album! I bought this cd, mainly for
Fire, and Love Rollercoaster. But Skin Tight, is really great, and Sweet Sticky Thing is too! Almost every song on here is good! If you have an ounce of soul in your system, and you love funk, THIS IS A MUST HAVE!

I may be only 24 years old, but the Ohio Players are a great group. My favorite songs on this album are Fire, Skin Tight, and the hottest slow jam ever, Heaven Must be Like This. It is meant to make you jam. A true collector's item.

I was lucky enough to see these guys perform at a FREE outdoor concert in Lower Manhattan around 2002, and let me tell you, they were KICKIN' IT. The horn section was real tight, and the lead singer still has all the funk of his earlier years. It was truly a beautiful event!!!!!!!! How can you NOT feel the funk of Roller Coaster or Skintight??!!

These are my homeboys from Ohio and they know how to throw a party! They have several CD's but this one does it for me with the two slow tracks I want to be Free and Heaven must be like this. Sugarfoot made a CD on his own which I like but I can't find. Does anyone know where to get it has songs on it like I'm your Sugar etc...

The Best R&B Band Ever,
This review is from: 20th Century Masters (Audio CD)
The Best R&B Band Ever!!! I know some will disagree with me, but this is the band that really rock my boat. I mean, they were awesome and it wasn't forced or fake. The rawness of their funk is sooo addictive that you will never put this cd down. I am in the process of getting ALL their cds, but this one is a great way to be introduce to their music.

If you're an Ohio Players fan like I am, you'll probably enjoy this CD. My favorite song is "Let's Do It (Interpolated with "Let's Love"). Next to Earth, Wind & Fire, these guys are my second favorite band of all time.

ohio funk history,

I am from youngstown, ohio ;When the players,as we affectionately call them, first started out, they were the ohio untouchables. They have been to the mountain top.Former players keyboardist billy beck still lives in youngstown,It"s fun to talk to him and listen to the wonderful stories of the players on their many, many world tours. One really fascinating story, when they were recording love rollercoaster,a young lady was supposed to had been murdered in an ajoining studio. If you listen to the song, you will here a scream, was it really a killing or just a hoax, billy would never tell me.as far as this album goes,It is the sh-t

A wonderful intro to a great band of the 70s!,
By
This review is from: 20th Century Masters (Audio CD)
The core members of what would become the Ohio Players was first formed in 1959 in Dayton,Ohio as the Ohio Untouchables. The group under went many changes in the next few years,as is often the case, and in 1967 they reformed into the Ohio Players. They disbanded in 1970 only to reform a few months later.Signed to the Westbound label in Detroit, the group ended up with a #1 song Funky Worm. They issued three albums with Westbound, all with provocative titles(and album covers)like Pain and Pleasure. In /73 they signed with Mercury Records and their careers took off. With a tight funky soul filled beat supplemented with a heavy and grooving base line, the Ohio Players went on to deserved fame and fortune.Hits came like Love Rollercoaster,Fire and Who'd She Coo.The Players could also lay down a great mood piece like Sweet Sticky Thing.Along with the hot songs came ever more hot album covers. The ebony models used had nothing to hide, covered with a well placed fire hose or covered in dripping honey;eroticism at its best and all part of the mystique the Players were pushing. In relation to these covers,I sold a good portion of my LP collection a few years ago.Ones that I still cannot part with are the Ohio Players Mercury Albums. They were single LPs but the albums folded open to reveal the entire picture going from the front to the back;and the inside picture was nothing to sneeze at either!
I have said it before and I will say it again.Universal with these Millenium Collection CDs sometimes hit the mark and sometimes they miss by a mile.Well this CD certainly hits the mark. Most of the Players more important songs are here for your listening pleasure and all are the full LP versions. For a more extensive look at their output there are other CDs available to be had but this is not only a good intro for the passing fan,but I think a good one for the Player devotees out there also. Highly recommended listening,of a great and talented group of musicians. |
