Good value, but Gold is better,
By
This review is from: 20th Century Masters (Audio CD)
Parliament had long funk songs so this budget album is actually around 70 minutes long. However, Parliament Gold is 2CDs and less than twice the price so I suggest you go with it instead. Gold also has the 10 minute version of Flash Light (my favorite track) instead of the 5 minute version that's on this one.

Do YOU want the Funk?,

If you really want to get a party started, you might as well have this CD. Funky classics such as Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker) and Flash Light are sure to fill that dance floor (or living room floor soon to become a dance floor.) And let's not forget some of the good songs that aren't as classic, such as Doctor Funkenstein, P-Funk and Aqua Boogie (a Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadooloop). If you like funk, you need this CD.

Loads of fun...,

Parliment was strange, but in a good way. Their musical soundscapes were colorful, acid-laced, and most importantly just begged you to shake your butt. Far beyond mere disco, they had musical arrangments that were textured and complex. But most of all, they're just fun to listen to.

This CD is very good introduction to Parlaiment. It has very good selection of songs and it is funkin' good. "Give Up The Funk", "Mothership Connection", and especially my favorite "Get Up For the Down Stroke". It is good value, so buy the CD.

A Must Own,

This anthology does what the great ones do--makes we want to hear everything these guys ever recorded. "Aquaboogie" is my favorite, but every track on here is a classic. I try to expose youngsters to this music every chance I get. For that 1 out of 100 that gets it, the effort is worthwhile.

Good starting point for Parliament, but...,

...keep in mind the missing songs that are here. Sure, what's here is great, and all of the classics (for the most part) appear here. 'Tear The Roof Off Of The Sucker,' 'P. Funk,' 'Mothership Connection' and the underrated album classic in it's 1974 version 'Testify' all appear on their installment in UMG's '20th Century Masters' series.
And the sound quality is excellent! But, why isn't the legendary live version of 'Let's Take It To The Stage' or 'Fantasy Is Reality' on this set? Overall, do yourself a favor and buy 'Funked Up: The Very Best of Parliament.' Every song on here (with the exception of 'Testify') is on that one, making that compilation the better buy. But this is still good and enjoyable, nonetheless.
