Well, the same age-old addage applies to albums; and it's definitely appropriate here. While this cover might be one of the most unintentionally hilarious to be pressed up on cd since Big Bear's 'Doin Thangs' dropped nearly ten years ago, the material contained within is conversely some of best to drop in nearly ten years. Sacramento has long housed such pioneering and innovative rap artists such as Brotha Lynch Hung, Hollow Tip, Gangsta Dre, First Degree, Mr. Doctor and many others, and Loki does not only an excellent job here of keeping the legacy alive and well, but further, he injects a much needed shot of adrenaline into a subgenre that was in dire need.

I was a big fan of Loki's debut album, 'Illegitimati', which was released on the same label (Siccmade Records) in the year 2000 (cue Conan O'Brien's faux-falsetto); and Loki doesn't disappoint with this, his sophomore release. And while '21 Gun Salute' is quite different from the previously mentioned 'Illegitimati' -- much more personal and introspective -- Loki doesn't stray so far as to disregard or neglect his large group of faithful followers that have been down since his early days rhyming with Mr. Doctor on his classic Sacramento debut album, 'Setrippin Bloccstyle' (don't own it? buy it NOW).

I could go on and on about this album, breaking down each and every song, its intricacies, and why it's far better than the vast majority of rap records that oversaturate the market beyond belief... but then again... would that even be saying much?

Either way, this is an album that's seemingly slipped under the radar of a lot of fans. This is good music. It's not without flaws, of course. Some beats I could've done without. Some (most) guest appearances I could've done without. But Loki shines on this album, he's making music that he believes in, not just music that he believes will cash him the biggest check. I appreciate that. So should you.

On this, Loki's second album for Siccmade Muzicc, Loki displays a notable evoluttion in both style and delivery. It's a shame that this album was over looked when itwas released (due in no small part to bad and nonexistant marketing, courtesy of the label).

A lot of attention has been drawn to the cover. Many fans lauded the hand-drawn look of the cover, and some said that it dissuaded them from buying the album. However, the album has a folk-art quality about it, in that it does not purport to be a product of artifice. In an era where so mnay rappers were boasting about non-existant riches, Loki stepped away and made a personal epic about his own trials and triumphs. This personal approach to muzicc was no doubt jarring to fans who merely wanted musical theatre.

The production on this album, as well as the lyrical content, is miles ahead of anything on Loki's previous "illegitimati" album. Strings and powerful drums create a backdrop for the drama described in Loki's lyrics, delivered with a more confident and complex style than his previous work.

Loki would go on to collaborate with X-Raided on the "Ignition" album, another triumph of artistic development for Loki.

Perhaps the most concise and focused Siccmade album...period!

This album is a masterpiece from start to finish.Really every song is hard no songs that make you yawn.Illegitamati has more of a hardcore 90s sound with a darker feel. This album is ruff yet smooth and very creative.I am 28 and been obsessed with sac town rap mostly black market and siccmade ever since season of the siccness and have heard nearly every release from the two labels. That being said I can tell you this is the best album siccmade has released far better than lynchs suicide note and sicxs if these walls could talk.Loki is different from the other sac town rappers with his noticable voice, clever storys and lyrics, and is original in a sense that he follows the typical formula for his label yet he sets himself apart and takes those well known siccmade sounds and puts a loki twist on it to say it best. From classic sac town releases like gangsta dre's gangbangin poetry to lynchs 24 deep to hollow tips flawless this no doubt is in the top 10 best sacramento rap albums ever.Buy this album it is worth the money and you will be glad you have it.
