This cd is GREAT. If you are a Judy fanatic you will love this cd. All of these songs are avaliable in other cds though.If you are a budding fan this is a great package of songs. Personally I love ALL of the songs in this cd. If you have other cds with these songs it's not worth it. The sound is great. I HOPE EVERYONE THAT BUYS THIS CD ENJOYS IT. Bye.

Robert Parker has done it again! Sure, Rhino has released most of the film soundtracks on various CD's, but it's nice to have these recordings peppered with some Decca recordings all on one CD. If you've never heard a Robert Parker CD, you're in for a treat. He had re-mixed Judy's songs from "Broadway Melody of 1938" for a Hollywood compilation CD about 10 years ago (Robert Parker's Hollywood), and as with all of his re-mixes, they sounded great and are still superior to the Rhino releases. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD - you can't go wrong!

Plus, this CD represents Judy in her "early prime" - at a time when she was young, healthy, and in crystal clear voice. In later years her voice would deepen and acquire a certain pathos and power unlike anyone before or since, but it's always nice to hear the sweet sounds of the "young Judy" - an artist in the discovery phase of her career - learning and experimenting and enjoying herself. Naysayers can say what they want about Judy (the tragic figure and all), but no one can doubt that Judy Garland was the best female film musical star of the 20th Century. Just listen to this CD and you'll hear why.

Robert Parker has done numerous stereo transcriptions of classic jazz and popular artists over the years, but this CD devoted to Judy Garland is, in my opinion, his best. Mixing tunes Judy did at MGM and at Decca, the disc enables one to listen to early Garland as never before: in crisp, high-dynamic sound, almost as if the recordings were made yesterday. These are not the "stereo transcriptions" of yesteryear, but remasterings of the original 78 rpms and soundtracks that not only make the orchestrations less distant but Judy's voice far more rich. Going from her very first sessions at Decca in 1936 (Stompin' at the Savoy/Swing, Mr. Charlie) and including some very rare tracks from her early films - the jewel of which, to this ear, is Minnie From Trinidad - Parker has sampled Garland's early film and recording work as no other compilation. The liner notes by Lawrence Schulman are informative and well-written; the song notes by Max O. Preeo for each track are equally well done. This is definitely a disc not just for fans. It's an "ear-opener" for anyone who might be tempted to discover what Judy Garland was all about.
