Amazing voice,
By CloudRyder9 "Design will save the world" (Cupertino, CA, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 219 Days (Audio CD)
I heard one of the tracks on my Pandora station and was blown away by his voice. I purchased that one track based on the voice alone. I was shocked to realize he was 19 years old, and the winner of the Canadian Idol contests...lol (I'm laughing because normally anything "Idol" automatically repels me). I have not heard all his songs, nor do I feel compelled to buy this CD because (no offense to all the Idol fans) the first CDs produced as byproducts of Idol shows are always over produced and too "fan friendly" for my taste. Understandably, they are trying to cater to the show's fans, whose ages range from preschoolers to grandmas. However I feel compelled to write a review on the sole basis there seems to be lacking an "objective" review in general. I do not follow the Idol shows, American or Canadian. But Kalan's voice is undeniably a gem...I can hardly believe there is all that lung power in that elfin body of his. Given his musical background, I will definitely keep tabs on this kid and wait to see how he applies his own personal tastes in music to his sophmore release. If anything, buy the CD on the strength of his voice alone.

219 Days of Hard Work,

I found this C.D. to be extemely well done. Kalan Porter had very little time to make this C.D. and yet he did a excellent job on it. Kalan is a very strong singer, (as you can hear when listening to this C.D.) Kalan's win on Canadian Idol was well deserved. I think that Kalan Porter is a excellent role model for the young generation that wants to pursue a goal. Kalan Porter shows the young singers today that anything is possible when you put your hardest effort out. I am looking forward to Kalan's next C.D. GO KALAN!!!

I'm new to Kalan Porter, but a friend has given me his album. What a beautiful musical talent this young man has. His voice has a deeper register than I expected, while his phrasing and use of the rhythm of the subject music further shows his musicality. I love the ballads, while the "out there" tracks are probably more for those who love the man himself. It's obvious Kalan is a very perceptive performer and, as he matures, will grow further into his own inimitable style. His career should be watched with great interest.

GO GET IT!,

I have the CD and I think that it is really good. It really shows more of a different side of Kalan Porter. And the reason why his album went double platinum and the single went eight times platinum was because of one thing. His hair. That is what all the girls (like me)probably like about him the most.As for me, I like everything about him. Over all, it is bound to get you dancing. I do not care about what the critics all say. It is really good and every fan who loves Kalan and who loves Canadian Idol should go and get it. By the way, Kalans second album is coming out in March 2006.

Ultimatly, It's Still An "Idol" Debut,

I never payed much attention to this kid back in his singing karaoke on CTV days. I just thought he was cute. But after all that, with "Single" and "In Spite Of It All" as singles I became a "pubescent, hormonal, female fan" (if you watch The Royal Canadian Air Farce you know what I'm talking about). This is an overview on the songs I find amazing: "Praeludium and Allegro" is a savoury violin solo. Very melodic and it shows that Kalan can do more than sing his heart out and make girls scream. "She's So Dangerous", it's an upbeat, catchy song. A downright delightful track. "Single" The song that started it all. If this song was sung by a band it could easily be out into the same pop-rock category that Good Charlotte is place in. "In Spite Of It All" this is the song that made me obsessed. Co-written by Randy Bachman of The Guess Who is another reason why it rocks so much. I love how the violin is distinctive. This, in my opinion, is the catchiest "idol" song to have ever graced the earth. "Awake In A Dream" now, when I first heard this song I thought it was romantic, and lovely...now I see that it's really REALLY cheesy. Not to say it's still not good. Kalan sings with so much emotion it doesn't matter how cheesy the lyrics are. He really is that talented. "After All" written by the man himself. I find this song very raw, basically pure rock and roll. I can't help but think of Our Lady Peace when I hear this song. It would be lovely to hear Raine Maida sing this song. "And We Drive" featuring Randy Bachman again (this time on guitar as well as composing credits) it gives that same essence that "In Spite Of It All" delivered a few tracks ago. "True Colors" with Theresa Sokyrka. To be honest, I'd much rather have Theresa sing the entire thing. Either way it's still an amazing duet. Both show so much emotion that you would think they meant those words they were singing to each other (or did they really mean them? I smell a scandal!) Overall it's a pretty good CD. I myself am not a fan of the ballad songs (minus "Awake in a Dream" and at times "Lucky Day"). It's probably just my hormones talking though, what else is gonna come out of a 14 year old girl with no time on her hands? 4 out of 5. even though half the CD is the peaceful and melodic songs I'm not too fond of, the upbeat pop-rock songs are just too damn catchy! It's worth the buy if you like the videos played on MuchMusic.

Being in the US I had never heard of Kalan Porter until I happened to watch a few clips of him online. And WOW, was I blown away! He is such a versatile singer with a very powerful voice. I'm sure most of his fans love Kalan for his voice, more so than his angelic looks. Being one of the fans who love him for his voice, this cd came as a bit of a disappointment.
In spite of the fact this cd is below what I expected, Kalan is still my favorite singer. Too bad his voice isn't properly showcased in this album. The songs fail to show the true range and depth of his wonderful voice. Hopefully Kalan will have more of a part in the making of his second album.

The Top Idol Worldwide...period, and I'm in the USA!,
By Jonathan "ctryfan" (North Carolina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 219 Days (Audio CD)
I'm a guy and I'm in the US!! I am 25 and live in North Carolina.
I became a fan of his music after going to Can Idols website just for the heck of it one day a few months ago, since he was the winner I checked his official site to see if he was as good as our American Idols. I was blown away! The only person in American Idol who even comes close to him in music quality is Kelly (her new stuff), but talentwise, Kalan has more of that than most artist period for someone his age! I wish he'd put his music out here!! I think he would tear up our charts bigtime! I ordered his CD the same night I went to his site and got it 3 days later in my mailbox, since then it hasn't left my CDplayer. I became of fan of his cause I like classic rock music and after hearing his versions of rock classics from Canadian Idol downloads, I think he has the voice and soul to take music to a place where it never has been before, he has almost brought a whole new element to rock mixing it with Classical sounds. It's pure musical genius and thats all there is to it. I can't wait to hear what he'll create now that he has more freedom on his 2nd album. We need Kalan Porter's music here in the US, I think he could start a new musical revolution that would shake up the rock world. There was Elvis, then the Beattles, Nirvana, and I think if he came here, one day Kalan would rank on that list. All those artists transformed music with their own never heard of before sounds, just like Kalan is doing in Canada now. He will be an international superstar. Canada gave the US and the world Celine, Shania, Bryan Adams, so many more, soon Canada will share Kalan too, and the sooner the better. |
