5.0 out of 5 stars I did the research and this is the best deal on STANDARDIZED Milk Thistle on Amazon
I take Milk Thistle every day. I also take LIV52 along with it. Liv52 can also be purchased here on Amazon and go there to read my review on that one for a more detailed account of how these products have worked for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not as much silymarin as I thought
All the reviews go on and on about how this is the best deal per active ingredient of Silymarin because it is a standardized extract. When I actually got the bottle I was disappointed to find that there is only 175 mg of 80% standardized extract per serving (2 capsules) which, as listed on the bottle, is 140mg of Silymarin for 2 pills. The bottle I got at TJs (which I...

I take Milk Thistle every day. I also take LIV52 along with it. Liv52 can also be purchased here on Amazon and go there to read my review on that one for a more detailed account of how these products have worked for me.

I have had issues with high liver enzymes and fatty liver and so I take Milk Thistle and Liv52 to lower them. In looking for Milk Thistle, I looked at every product here on Amazon and did the math on each. First:

ONLY BUY STANDARDIZED MILK THISTLE!

This one offers TWO bottles of 200 each (400 caps) at 175mg, or 140 mg of standardized Silymarin, the stuff that does the job. Silymarin is the ingredient in the plant, Sylibum marianum, or milk thistle the common name. There is 175 mg of Sylibum marianum in a cap. When it is said to be Standardized, that means the Sylibum marianum contains 80% of the ingredient silymarin or 140 mg Silymarin. If the product isn't standardized to 80%, they may contain only small amounts of the stuff that does the job and a bunch of stuff that does nothing at all.

If you figure the total mg of the stuff that does the work, Silymarin in each product and divide the cost per milligram, this one comes out to be the best deal by far. Many products offer higher doses per pill, but you only get 100 count or sometimes less. I take 4 caps per day, 2 in the morning and 2 at night which gives me 560mg per day. That is perfect. At 4 a day this is a 100 day supply.

Bottom line, for the STANDARDIZED Milk Thistle offered on Amazon, mg per dollar, this is the best deal. I am just Joe Consumer here and like to pass on my research for those who can benefit from it.

Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Product at a great price, September 22, 2009

First of all, only buy supplements from reputable companies. I have been taking 21st Century supplements since I was a child, so I know they are an excellent, tried and tested company. And only buy Standardized 80% Silymarin. Other companies advertise that their product has more than 1000 mg and they are even cheaper than this, but they do not mention how much Silymarin there is inside their product. It probably has very little Silymarin, or none at all. NEVER scrimp on things you put into your body. There are other excellent brand as well, but they do not have this offer of 2 bottles of 200. This is the best price for quality Milk Thistle.

My husband had a very high liver function test from his blood work. AST was 57 and ALT was 111. We bought this product - after 6 months, his lab results on his liver function are now in the normal range. We are so pleased that his liver is functioning correctly. Thank you for the prior reviews, that lead us to this product.

All the reviews go on and on about how this is the best deal per active ingredient of Silymarin because it is a standardized extract. The bottle I got at TJs (which I was taking while I waited for "the good stuff") simply lists the straight Silymarin content as 200mg per pill. The bottle was half the price for the same number of servings and each serving has nearly 50% more active ingredient. I'm guessing the other reviews are a clever form of marketing, but I guess that's what I get for trying to fix a number on a blood test with a bottle of pills that is forced by law to contain a disclaimer saying is isn't guaranteed to do anything. Caveat Emptor.

Wow. After a month on this milk thistle, my 12 year old labrador experienced a great result on his blood work tests. Because he needs arthritis medication, his liver function levels need to be checked. His enzyme levels were too high to get him started on medication so I tried this milk thistle... it did the trick. Much less expensive than the veterinary version. Very pleased!

I tried the least expensive (non-standardized) milk thistle available on amazon. The standardized seems to do a noticably better job, and 21st Century has the best price for standardized milk thistle that i've been able to find.

I am very pleased with the outstanding quality and value of 21st century products . This milk thistle is very effective and I noticed a difference in how I feel after only a couple of weeks . I use milk thistle for detox and it has been excellent for kidney health as well. I ordered through automatic shipment to save few bucks and be sure to have it so I don't miss a day.

I started taking this on the advice of my physician. He indicated that taking this supplement should help protect my liver (which can be compromised by other medication that I have to take). Just last week I heard the same thing on the Dr.Oz show. I have this on automatic ordering and they are delivered as promised in a timely fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars My ALT dropped from 63 to 28, October 2, 2011
By

I have had "fatty liver" for a few years. My ALT (alanine transaminase) score has been in the 60s, with the normal range being 41 or below for my age (late 30s). My last test was in March 2011 and my ALT score was 63. I did some online research and on bought the 21st Century Milk Thistle Extract and the Himalaya Liver Care and took both of them almost every day for six months. Then, last week, I had my ALT tested again and it had dropped to a 28! I couldn't believe it. I thought it was a misprint. I'm not a doctor, so I can't say whether the drop is from these pills or from some other factor, but I'm not going to mess with a good thing. Also, both of these products are natural (and they even smell good) and go down easy without any stomach upset.

3.0 out of 5 stars What part extract is this, August 24, 2011
This review is from: 21st Century Standardized Herbal Extract Capsules, Milk Thistle Extract, Maximum Strength, 200-Count Bottles (Pack of 2) (Health and Beauty)
While everyone has been blah-blah-ing about how great standardized stuff is, why is there no mention about whether this is a seed or root extract ? In some forums I read to look only for root and not for seed, but wiki says the seed has been the source for many years.
And then I cam across full-spectrum that is not standardized (better?) and then those that makes use of all the parts.
Can someone educate us on that ? Too bad I cant just ask a question here instead of rating the product.
