buy this as an example for other bands to see.,
This review is from: 23/5/00 - Estadio Do Restelo, Lisbon, Portugal (Audio CD)
this set was the first of the tour. recorded in lisbon in front of one of the most energetic crowds i have ever heard on a live album. uncut and really long. eddy vedder's vocals are rusty, they had a couple bad mics, and the drum kit broke down halfway through, but really pearl jam is the only band to have had enough balls to release an entire tour (minus Roskilde) yet. i really would be excited to see other bands try this. this is why i am asking anyone who is even remotely interested in pearl jam to buy at least one of these live albums to make the sales numbers rise high. my thinking is that if this set of live albums has successful sales numbers other great live bands will try something similar. imagine bands like; dave matthews band, rage against the machine, nine inch nails, and your favorite bands following pearl jam's example. bottom line this set is an awesome example of pearl jam's ability as live artists and daring enough to realease it uncut and with some open wounds. SUPPORT THE CAUSE, BUY AT LEAST ONE OF THE PEAL JAM OFFICIAL BOOTLEGS!!!

The Crowd Saves this Rusty Opening Show,

This review is from: 23/5/00 - Estadio Do Restelo, Lisbon, Portugal (Audio CD)
Disclaimer: Owner of all 72 official PJ bootlegs. I apologize to anyone who went to this show and loved it, but when you sit and listen to this bootleg, this is not a performance to be proud of. Understandably, this was the very first show in Pearl Jam's massive 2000 world tour, and they are really rusty tonight. Despite a few winners like "Red Mosquito" and "Black," the boys are really off their game tonight. In a show full of musical errors, the low point is a disastrous "Faithful" where the band barely manages to stumble through to the end. To add salt to the wound, there is also technical trouble, as Matt Cameron's rig breaks down sometime in "Faithful." While repairs are being made, the band goes ahead and plays "Untitled" and part of "Last Kiss" without the drums, as the crowd claps along. This is still a very enjoyable bootleg, however, because of the ecstatic Portuguese audience. The crowd sings along to every single word, in English, and acts as a giant human teleprompter when Eddie Vedder forgets big chunks of lyrics in "Wishlist" and "Immortality." In between songs, the crowd often breaks spontaneously into the chorus of whatever song was just played, or fills the time with glorious soccer-style chants. For diehard PJ-fans, you may still like this bootleg just for the audience, which almost puts on a better show than the band.

When I first discovered that Pearl Jam decided to release every show of their Binaural tour in 2000 I was initially skeptical of their intentions. I thought it was just another way for them to attarct attention in order to raise their diminished public profile and dwindiling record sales. While the cardboard sleeves these albums are packaged in are not exactly glamourous and actually cause damage to the discs after a while the musical contents of these bootlegs can be a potent reminder of why Pearl Jam, even on an off night, is one of the most thrilling and mercurial live bands of the last twenty years. This paticular show is their first of the tour and of the series and while you can definitely find more musically proficent ones it is a still a good introduction to their no overdubs, warts and all approach to live albubs. A good example of this is found in Faithful when, in the middle of the song, Matt Cameron's drums fall to the ground (the band continues and finishes the song, believe it or not.) Moments such as these are one reason for fans of the band to look into these albums as much as listening to the band tear into Animal and Red Mosquito. After the "technical difficulties" of the drums are sorted out during Last Kiss the show flows pretty well until Immortality when Ed forgets the words to Immortality (get used to this, he does this almost everytime this song is played during the tour.) Also, the band struggle to find their feet on Alive (another difficult song for them on this leg of the tour.) The band finish on a high note with their perennial closer, Yellow Ledbetter. All and all, a good introduction to what will prove to be a stellar series of shows to come.

Not bad for the first night...,

Recently, I really got into the music of Pearl Jam. I acquired their studio albums, and all that remains is the live stuff. So I decided to take on a massive undertaking and get all 72 bootlegs. The first show in Lisbon is not bad for opening night. While the band is far from their top form, they show a lot of promise in this first bootleg. The opener, "Of The Girl," is fabulous, and the band shows a lot of energy on "Do The Evolution," "Animal," "Red Mosquito," and other tracks on the first disc. Technical problems disrupt the momentum of the show, but there are several good performances to be found on the second disc as well. "Thin Air" is good, "Alive" is wonderful, and so is "Yellow Ledbetter." The band makes good on some of their mistakes as well; "Faithful" is not without its problems, but it sounds just fine. Not that the band isn't off on a few tunes; "Daughter" sounds rushed, "Evacuation" sounds just as bad live as it does on the album, and Eddie Vedder flubs portions of "Wishlist" and "Immortality." But overall, the show isn't bad for the first night, thought there's undoubtedly better shows to come.

I read all 6 reviews and I agree with all of them : I'm no exception , and this one gets 5 stars ( can I give it 6 ? ).The only flaw in this album is the quality of the recording in some cases ( never too bad , but not always top-notch ) , but that is not a big problem when weighed against the extraordinary ambiance of the show . This was Pearl Jam's opening show in Europe and the portuguese boys ( and girls ) really rocked with the band . At some times , both from the dialogues and from the songs , you can see how the crowd "guided" and challenged the band , contributing to create a magical experience . In the end , Eddie Veder's recognition of the crowd's enthusiasm was well deserved . As for the songs , from beginning to end there's only PJ at its best , especially giving the fact that PJ is REALLY a live animal , a band that transcends itself when on stage , but still I'll say that the versions of "Corduroy" , "Betterman" , "Alive" and "Thin air" are outstanding . And "Yellow leadbetter" was also a good choice to close the show . I really wish I had been there ! Fortunately , someone had the bright idea of recording this show !

And believe me, this is pure truth, because although Portugal is one small nation, we (yes, i'm portuguese, and yes, i was there!) received, for sure, one of the best shows of this tour! You might not agree with me when you look to the other setlists, but listen to this album just a little bit and you'll know what i mean! A great night, an energetic crowd that knew every song, the best band in the world... I won't write about the songs, we all know them, but i must say Portugal had one of their best sequences - "Thin Air", "Daughter", "Evacuation", "Immortality", "Betterman" and "Black"! Fantastic!! People loved it, and Pearl Jam noticed it, as you can hear when they finished "Black" and we continued singing tururu turururu over and over, till Vedder joined us, followed by the rest of the band... Uau! It was so great!! This was a big, big concert and that makes this album a great, great one!!! Listen to it and you will find why Vedder sang: "i rather be, i rather be in Portugal"!

Pearl Jam was made to be heard live. Being the first show on their tour, one can understand when Ed flubs up the lyrics here and there, esp. on "Immortality". But it just doesn't matter. The crowd picks up the slack, and between songs chants like wild soccer fans. Almost disturbingly so when they sing the title line from "Alive" in unison before "Last Exit", sounding eerily like a scene early in the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind".Glad to see that "Faithfull" made it onto disc one, while fans of the max-firepower "Corduroy" won't be disappointed. Ed even throws in a small snippet of what sounds like "Save it for Later" from English Beat at the end of "Better man". As usual, it's the improv that makes the live show sound great, and the reason to get more than one of their live discs. I definitely plan to do just that.

I'm Portuguese, i was there! It rocked so hard, you wouldn't believe! The portuguese crowd is definetly one of the best in the world, and it's refered by many bands as so. This show was scheduled for the atlantic pavillion, which has a capacity of 15.000, but the tickets sold out in a week, so it was re-scheduled to a rather big stadium nearby.Almost every song was sanged along with the band, as it is in almost every concert played in portugal! Scorpions recorded their "unplugged" album and dvd here too. We are proud of the reviews, thanks for the recognition! Pearl Jam Rocks!

I finally bought this show from Lisbon, overall it is a superb show! The audience is having a good time as well as the band. The setlist is nice with Eddie doing a solo version of Last Kiss, and great takes on Red Mosquito and Black. There are some minor errors in this show but it doesn't effect the bands good spirits and the audience sure is estatic, if you looking for a PJ show that is high in energy and everyone is having a great time, this is it. This show is one of my favorites, it only falls behind Milan and Prauge.

This was the first date of Pearl Jam's 2000 tour and it kind of shows, if the fact that Mr. Vedder occassionally flubbing his lines is any indication. Actually, he messes up the lines a bit more than occassionally. This is a bit frustrating because when Ed forgets his lines, I also forget them. Thankfully, the audience seems to know them and Ed appeals to them, at these lyric-forgetting instances, to help him out. I wouldn't consider this audience the best singing audience in the world (no offense to any Lisbon concert-goers reading this), but they are enthusiastic. In "Better Man"m for instance, they jump the gun and start singing the lines shortly after the band has started playing the song. They also take to chanting the name of a popular Portuguese beer (if I'm not mistaken).
The highlight of this show, for me, was that the band played "Faithful" (or "Faithfull" as it's spelled on the Yield CD), one of my favorite songs ever, and one that, to the best of my knowledge, has not been performed at any of their other European shows. That makes this show unique, and for that reason alone, I rate it 5 stars. Now if only they released a bootleg that contains a performance of "leash." |
