I gave this book a good go. It had all the normal sci-fi stuff I like but for some reason it didn't really catch. Still a decent story and some nice touches but in the 2nd division.

It's not badly written, mind you, but just so slowly paced. A great deal of content is spent on introspection..

I found myself skipping whole chapters(something I almost never do), just to stay interested.

Borrow before you buy this.

His vision of future technology is brilliant. The "Wow, how did he think of that!" moments are numerous. But I was disappointed in the characters, they seemed one dimensional and I never felt strongly about them. My fault perhaps. If you are a fan you'll be reading the book, not this review. If you're not I recommend Antarctica, my favourite of his.

Write an essay if you want to ruminate. You need narrative and ideas. The absence of reasonable narrative is a lead weight on this book.

Amazon reviews for 2312 are all over the map, so I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth. Rather than review the plot yet again, here's a critique.

As a former English Lit major, I'll weigh in strongly on the side of well written. I especially enjoyed the skillful balance between lyric descriptive passages that fire the imagination and plots and situations that kept me rushing onward. I found the "notes/excerpts" chapters to be a useful device to quickly provide some of the science background of the story without bogging down the narrative. I found myself rushing through, and then skipping over the list "chapters," though with a little patience I might have used those to do a little free association.

I don't care all that much about SF as a genre, so I'm pretty picky and critical. 2312 was an enjoyable and engrossing read, definitely a notch or two above my previous read (Madeline Ashby's vN). So why not 5 stars? I'm stingy with my stars and this book didn't quite get me into the deep thought and insights that come from the best of the best.

The price of this book put me off for a while, but since the Mars trilogy, felt this was a safe bet. I was very disappointed in the book and for me to not finish a book, is pretty rare. About half way through I just gave up, it was too long winded and overly complicated. No longer a KSR fan.

Detailed worldbuilding and lush vision. More of an immersive experience; don't expect a spellbinding thriller or action novel as many space operas tend to lean. If you are willing to sit back and take it where it leads, you will be rewarded. Superb writing, harkens back to the level of his Mars Trilogy.

Extremely long and in-depth view of the thoughts of the characters with very little done to develop the story. The story had a great potential at the beginning but fizzled out halfway through and then ended as though the author forgot what he was trying to do. I was very disappointed

A book of great description and planetary detail that encompasses a weak plot that quickly bores. Read it only if you are fascinated by our solar system and the possibilities of future terraforming. If you are looking for a rollicking story, look elsewhere.
