The 23rd Psalm: From the King James Bible [Hardcover]

Michael Hague (Illustrator)

Book Description

4 and up
The Lord is my shepherd,
I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside still waters.

The Twenty-Third Psalm is one of the most widely recognized and quoted passages of the Old Testament, and one of the first prayers that children are taught at home and in Sunday School. Michael Hague brings this most comforting psalm to life with his lavish and moving paintings of the natural world in harmony: there are beatific children and sweet baby animals and, presiding over all, the peaceful and loving presence of Jesus. This is a picture book that will be a perfect gift for a new baby, a child's first communion--or for any day that thanks are given.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3 In a handsome format, the framed verses of the King James Version, each decorated with a spray of golden pansies, appear on the versos and face full-page mixed-media illustrations of children in situations associated with the scriptural quotations. In most, the connection is apparent, but some, such as a preening swan for "thou anointest my head with oil," are a bit of a stretch. Nevertheless, the youngsters depicted in soft, rich colors in lush outdoor settings are winsomely realistic and expressive. However, although the Psalms are part of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible, the pictures stress Christianity, showing church steeples, a wreath-encircled cross, and a stained-glass window of Jesus Christ. This is more a traditional children's Biblical picture book than Bijou LeTord's The Little Shepherd (Doubleday, 1992), which paraphrases the words and has simple, gentle pictures of a Judean shepherd boy, or Julia Miner's The Shepherd's Song: The Twenty-Third Psalm (Dial, 1993; o.p.), which illustrates the psalm with scenes of a sheepherding family on a Greek island. Happily, there are always places for new interpretations of this beloved passage. Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
