GU is back to Excellent !,
By A Customer
This review is from: 24:7 (Audio CD)
This is truly the comeback of Global Underground, this new series is a great idea that will allow electronica fans to enjoy more than just dance music. Disc 1 is a BIG gem. It is a mix of downtempo, electronica, and melody. This disc is there with the best Aphex Twin, Plaid, and Bent records. A fantastic set, full of noises, effects, voices, and melody. Great for headphones ... unforgettable music. Disc 2 is also an incredible mix. This time we come back to the dance music we expect to listen from a GU record but better than that. We get a sick tech-tribal-deep-house full of great basslines and electro sounds. Absolutely amazing, track 2 of disc 2 will blow your head with the continuous pounding drums, they never stop, like a drill making a hole in your soul. A MUST buy for any electronica fan and for any dance music fan.

NOT TO BE MISSED,

Very Very Nice,

What a pleasant surprise this "24:7" thing is, in fact,it's great. If you're like me and like your music as vocal-free as possible...good news! On the fantastic 2nd CD, which really (and I mean this in a good way) kicks your [butt]---of 13 tracks, a whopping 10 are vocal-free! The deep bass beats really work your sub-woofer and the tracks are very creative and satisfying. The first CD has good tracks as well, but that second CD's where the action is. Hey what's with this new shape to the jewel box? It doesn't fit in any conventional CD slot. Kinda kewl. Anyway, I give this latest thang by Mr. Howells my highest recommendation. One last bit of advice...if you really want to love this music, I strongly suggest that you play the second CD first.

The evolution of a master,

In reading these others reviews I have to ask myself, What is so bad about the night disk?? I found it quite moving, in fact I can't seem to get out out of my cd player. While the day disk is certainly more uplifting and playful, the night disk offers a more emotional rollercoaster which I would most definitely recommend. It depends on your mood which is a characteristic that Danny Howells brings into his music. This album is not quite Nocturnal Frequencies, but its up there. He's moving in a progressive direction, taking deep house and trance to another level.

So with the general trend of electronica moving towards a chill-out atmostphere, Danny Howells has caught the wave with Disc 1 of pure chill out bliss without moving one to the pillow. Howells gives us a seamless journey through different levels of consciousness or lack thereof in this first "Day" disc. THe second "Night" disc is titled appropriately with Danny at his funkiest best, droppin nasty beats that make one forget that it's only 4/4. There is occasional cacaphony; however Danny most likely has employed those few and rare tracks to keep the groove honest and the listener honest. I'd like to give this 2CD set 5 stars, but something tells me that there is more in store for Danny Howells in the near future as he reaches new heights in both popularity and music making. My guess is you should buy this album as a marker of the times, to allow yourself the joy of remembering this album years removed....or maybe your ears need some long lost soothing. Either way, you can't lose.

Not what you think from these reviews,
By A Customer
This review is from: 24:7 (Audio CD)
well you do see alot of people giving it 5 stars. but in my opinion it doesn't deserve that much. maybe 2 or 3 stars. i'll give it 2.if your looking for something fresh and new and listen to alot of already stellar house deep tracks then this will give you a smile since the whole thing is basically chilled out house tunes. you can buy those kind of sounds elsewhere in the market since the whole chill out market is flooded with so many comps. i expected some upbeat and danceable house tunes from Danny but there was hardly any on this. the first disc is all laid back chilled out tunes. half of them are pretty uninspiring and dare i say boring. but the 1st disc is good background music when you have friends or family over and having a chat 2nd disc is suppose to pick up the pace but not till track 5. that leaves you with 9 slightly more upbeat tracks afterwards. but his nocturnalfrequency comps are much better. this is kind of a downer for me. this is not the kind of music you hear in a club. maybe at a lounge. the chilled out tunes are unmemorable and you listen to it once. maybe i'm alone here but i wouldn't recommend this. go buy renaissance revelations instead from danny and nick warren.

I think this is a fanastic double pack. This along with Roger Sanchez's "Release Yourself", the Fabric releases by Doc Martin and Stacey Pullen is one of the best compilations I heard all year. The track selection is dynamite, the mixing smooth and engaging. I really can't figure out which CD is "better"--they are just different.Anyway, whatever. It's a high quality compilation and well worth checking out. A great example of a DJ reaching out, doing something a bit different.

An incredible and eclectic mix,

24:7 is easily one of my personal favorites, right up there with GU#25 Toronto. I am particularly enamored with Howells' use of two discs, each with it's own distinct feel. Anyone who wants sweet, seductive downtempo and cutting edge progressive house...this album is for you. Simply brilliant programming and mixing. Easily one of Global Underground's greatest releases. Plus, it comes in a cool case!

I have thoroughly listened to both outputs of the 24:7 series and have to say hands down, this Howells mix has Burridge beat. Only for the sheer fact that Howells uses a different approach. In my observation, a more substantial approach. There is something deeper than thought that has been created here and placed within each careful selection. I love what Howells does on the day disc to keep things chill enough to romance the sun or stay in on a rainy day and glide through the ease of flow upon each playback. When this man plays a record, he's not just pushing play. He knows exactly what sound comes out of that piece of plastic he's been holding onto for safe keeping until time presented itself to hear this spectacular sound.

Better? Impossible.,

Probably one of the 3 best electronic sets that I have heard from the GU Label.
I am not going to spend too much words to say how great is this double disc. If you really enjoy listening the nicest soft electronic music, this is one of the must have! This is a kind of music that takes you back to that perfect cloudy and rainy day when you did not worry about anything but life , absolutely a perfect atmosphere! And here's the story about, mmm, being free... Turum turum turum! Danny did it once again! |
