5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for everyone from beginner to expert
I am very happy with this book. I learned to do very basic crochet (ch and dc) about ten years ago, but did not stick with it. I gave it another try about 5 months ago, and really got "hooked" this time. Going on just that basic knowledge, I began to teach myself with books how to do other stitches, read patterns, etc. This book has some very nice projects in it that...

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent quick patterns
36 patterns listed in this book. 7 women's tops(one is a really wonderful tank top), 4 purses which aren't that great, 2 scarves, 7 hats, "hipster scarf" which looks pretty stupid, 4 afghans(one is a baby afghan and one is granny square), 6 doily coasters, 1 little girls sweater that looks like it is out of the 70s, a little boy's "footall onesie" that has an odd look to...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for everyone from beginner to expert, May 17, 2005
This review is from: 24-Hour Crochet Projects (Hardcover)
I am very happy with this book. I learned to do very basic crochet (ch and dc) about ten years ago, but did not stick with it. I gave it another try about 5 months ago, and really got "hooked" this time. Going on just that basic knowledge, I began to teach myself with books how to do other stitches, read patterns, etc. This book has some very nice projects in it that will not intimidate beginning crocheters, others that will be challenging enough to keep more advanced crocheters interested, and beautiful photographs of everything. One of the things I like best about it is that it names by brand and color the type of yarn used for each project, and suggests alternatives. For the most part, the author used inexpensive to moderately priced yarns that are easy to find in a craft store or discount store. Many of the other crochet books, I've found, use expensive wool, silk, ribbon yarns - that you can't find just anywhere and may make your simple sweater or tote bag project cost more than you can afford to/want to spend. There is only a short "crochet basics" stitch review section in the back of the book. If you can chain and you are comfortable with the basic crochet stitches, I think this is a really good book to start off with. Making something nice from a pattern for the first time will give you a great feeling and inspire you try more and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars something new in a day, May 22, 2005
This review is from: 24-Hour Crochet Projects (Hardcover)
Crocheting is having a fashion revival and this book helps show why. M's Weiss keeps the projects simple but interesting, easy enough for the beginners and something fast for the experienced crocheters. Want a new bag to take to the beach tomorrow? or how about a halter top? THis book shows you how to make these items and a lot more.
I recommend this book highly for the ease of the instructions as well as the diversity of the patterns.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good crochet book!, October 19, 2005
This review is from: 24-Hour Crochet Projects (Hardcover)
This has a good basic t-shirt and tank top pattern. There is a sexy camisole top, a halter top and a half-tank/sexy top, some hats and a couple bags I like. Ordinary patterns fill the rest of the book; scarves, afghans, some ugly hats and a horrible purse, some doilies, kids' clothes, a hipster scarf that looks like a shawl and a headband. This is worth the $$ for the good patterns! Sizes go from small to large, yarn weights are listed and instructions/photos are great!

There are several summer shells/tanks in this book (some of the nicest I've seen for crochet), and many hats and bags. Each project is rated with a time estimate--but I've found they take me much longer than the estimate. So I would really argue that the average crocheter could make some of these projects in 24 hours.

My biggest pet peeve--books (as this one does) that list the yarn requirements in ounces, not yardage. Unless you are using the exact yarn, "16 oz" does not tell you much!

There is several yarn companies used in this book: Bernat, Crystal Palace, Judi and Company, Lion, Patons, J&P Coats, Red Heart, and TLC so it is not all high end yarns. Some materials list by yardage some by ounces. The approximate times are also listed. I found that the patterns I made were actually quicker to make than the listed times.

I would check this out at the local library before buying it sight unseen.

5.0 out of 5 stars great projects, January 2, 2006
This review is from: 24-Hour Crochet Projects (Hardcover)
I just got this book and can't wait to start on my first project. There are hats, scarves, tank tops with matching cardigans. This book is full of items that both my teenager or I could wear. P.S....After a year or so of owning this book, I want to add that I have used it to make a beautiful multi-striped scarf for myself (that always gets compliments), I've made hats for others as gifts, and the cute shell patterned cardigan a couple times as gifts. I really like this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to your crochet library, February 13, 2007

This offering by Rita Weiss would be a great asset to your crochet library. A variety of projects are included and I found myself saying over and over, "I've got to make this!" Both apparel and accessories are here for the asking. Pictures are plentiful and directions are well-written. I definitely recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars If you just have average crochet skills....., July 12, 2008
By
Got some time and a stash of yarn at your disposal? If you've got 24 hours (or thereabouts!) you can produce an afghan, a hat, a sweater or any of the projects in this book of projects by Rita Weiss. The shawl is really nice, and there are many things here that will pique your interest and spark your creativity!

Now, to be honest, I will tell you that if you are leading an ordinary life with work, activities, house work and other demands on your time this may well stretch out over a longer period of time. But the projects are, comparatively speaking, speedy ones -- in addition to being quite nice.
