How many times have you committed to read through the Bible in a year, only to quit a few weeks (or days) in? A week goes by and you feel like you're so far behind you'll never catch up. Or you lost your chart with the passages on it.

2.0 out of 5 stars 24/7 NLT Bible
I've read a chronologically-based Bible before (Daily Bible, edited by F. Lagarde Smith, pub. by Harvest House) so I had that as my standard to base this newer book against. I much prefer the Daily Bible to the 24/7 version. The 24/7 version has no added commentary, which I miss; the pages are very thin and easily stick together; and while it is chronological, it...

How many times have you committed to read through the Bible in a year, only to quit a few weeks (or days) in? A week goes by and you feel like you're so far behind you'll never catch up. Or you lost your chart with the passages on it.

There are so many obstacles it seems. But what if someone made a Bible in a translation that reads fluidly and has the dates printed right on that pages so that you know where to start and stop each day? This way if you miss a day (or a week) you don't necessarily need to try to catch back up, just go to today's date and read.

From what I understand, most of the "One Year Bibles" do this.

What makes this Bible a bit different is that it's arranged chronologically rather than in the traditional canonical order. So for instance, the book of Acts ends with Paul in Rome. Then instead of going to Romans, it goes to those books thought to have been written by Paul from his Roman jail. Granted there are some imterpretive choices made here, but as a reading Bible, this one is quite good.

The only thing that I'll mention about the particular format I'm reviewing is that it's on the smaller side with fairly small font. This is not an issue for me, but others may prefer a different format.

This is a Bible that I've started using everyday. The TNIV is still my primary translation for study, preaching etc. but the New Living Translation may be my favorite for just reading through large chunks of the Bible.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really great Bible!, January 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 24/7: A One Year Chronological Bible (Hardcover)
First I would like to say that I have never read the entire Bible before and I bought this Bible for me and two of my girlfriends so we could study the Bible together at college this year. I am a junior in college and my way of reading the Bible is usually just flipping around, or searching for verses that I feel relate to me. So reading through the Bible in one year will definitely be a challenge, but so far it has been so easy!

The NLT version is so easy to read and understand, and I love the way this Bible puts everything into a single column so it's like you are reading a novel! I also love that it is in chronological order. For instance, I just finished reading about Joseph, the great grandson of Abraham, and his life and death. Then immediately following Joseph's death the next story is about Job.... here is what this Bible says about the story of Job:

"The account of Job is traditionally thought to have taken place around the time of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (2200-1800 BC), or shortly thereafter. However, it could have occurred as late as the Exile (during the sixth century BC)"

So it really gives you at least an idea of when the people in the Bible actually lived and when the events happened. I really love that aspect of this Bible.

It is split up into daily readings that only take me about 10 minutes, 15 minutes max. Sometimes I have found myself even reading ahead because it is so interesting when you can actually understand God's word in a way that relates to you.

At first I thought the font was unusually small for a Bible, but I am used to it now and it honestly hasn't been an issue. The pages do have that shadow effect sometimes, but it really isn't bad at all. There is also plenty of space to write in the margins, and even a little space to write in the inside margins. It is pretty small, only a little taller than a BIC ballpoint pen (and abount an inch less wide than that same pen), but as a college student I really like the size because it doesn't take up much space.

Also, the shipping was awesome! Arrived to me and my friends just when Amazon said they would.

Overall, I definitely recommend this Bible to anyone who is looking read the Bible in one year. It is so relateable and easy to read and understand, I love it and so do my friends!

I've read a chronologically-based Bible before (Daily Bible, edited by F. Lagarde Smith, pub. by Harvest House) so I had that as my standard to base this newer book against. I much prefer the Daily Bible to the 24/7 version. The 24/7 version has no added commentary, which I miss; the pages are very thin and easily stick together; and while it is chronological, it repeats sections that are duplicated (such as Kings/Chronicles) instead of keeping the flow of the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Read through the Bible in a year. Affordable, compact, and chronological., February 7, 2009

If you're like many of my friends, you probably made a new year's resolution to read through the Bible in a year. While I hope the majority of you have made good on your resolution thus far, inevitably some of you are struggling or may have stopped doing it all together. When it comes to disciplines like reading our Bible each day and prayer, our minds are only too ready to help us come up with many excuses why we didn't get to it yesterday, won't be able to do it today, and what it is that will probably prevent us from getting to it tomorrow. For many of us, reading through the Bible in a year is a bit of a struggle and we need all the help we can find to allow us to stay organized and on track. If any of this sounds familiar, you are a perfect candidate for 24/7: A One Year chronological Bible.

This new Bible from Tyndale is designed to help you read through the entire Bible in a year. The text of the New Living Translation is divided into 365 daily readings. Each of these readings should take you approximately 15 minutes to complete. While there are a number of one year Bibles produced by Tyndale House Publishers, there is something that makes the organization of this Bible unique. Rather than being organized like a traditional Bible with the books in canonical order, the events of the Bible are arranged chronologically by the order in which they are believed to have taken place historically. Be sure to take the time to read through the introductory material for an explanation of the chronological organization of the Biblical text. Also take note of the general timeline and the explanation for the historic Christian symbols found throughout this book. Tyndale commissioned woodcuts of 12 historic Christian symbols, one for each month of the year. Each symbol graces the pages of the readings for its associated month.

This is a fairly compact Bible, measuring approximately 5" by 6 ½". I felt this made it comfortable to hold when reading. Also it is small enough to either stow away in a laptop bag or keep on the nightstand beside your bed. Depending on your preference, this book is available with either a paperback or hardcover binding.

If you're looking for a way to be more deliberate about reading through the Bible in a year, this affordable and compact, chronologically organized Bible may be just what you've been looking for to help you stay on track and see that new year's resolution through to completion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for 2nd Time Reading the Bible or Later, February 5, 2009
This review is from: 24/7: A One Year Chronological Bible (Hardcover)
This is an excellent resource for getting an extra perspective on the Bible. Rapid reading, reading for overview, is an important part of Bible study, as is the spiritual discipline of daily Bible study.

The chronological arrangement provided for this edition has its limitations. There are many disagreements on the dating of particular books of the Bible. In addition, there is some value in the canonical arrangement. Nonetheless, provided one has started at some other point, this will provide an excellent opportunity for a new perspective.

Key positive points:

1. The NLT text. The NLT is an exceptional Bible translation for this purpose.
2. Daily arrangement and transitional notes.
3. Inline reading plan.

Two drawbacks:

1. Binding that might not last the year.
2. Text that might be a bit small for one.

On the other hand, if the book were bigger or had heavier paper it would be much harder to carry and to use, so perhaps the compromise was OK.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Implementation Of A Chronological Bible, February 5, 2009
By
Gregory Cohoon (Greensboro, NC USA) - See all my reviews

This review is from: 24/7: A One Year Chronological Bible (Hardcover)
I love the idea of arranging the Bible in chronological order, and 24/7 does a great job of doing that in a format suitable for daily reading. Any implementation establishing a chronological order is sure to cause arguments. The Bible includes a four page general timeline, so it's pretty easy to see the choices the editors made for ordering the text. Each day's reading covers a chunk that can be read in about 10 or 15 minutes.

My complaint is that the plan is constructed around the calendar. I.e., there is a reading for January 1, January 2, etc. until December 31. I would much rather see a reading plan like this labeled as Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, ... Day 365 instead of forcing it to sync with the calendar. If you miss a day, there's no artificial pressure to catch up. All in all, though, that's a minor complaint.

What do I like about this Bible? I really like how it seems to want to be read. Not studied like a textbook, but read like a story. Its lack of a lot of reference material will ensure that you focus on the text itself and not start chasing (and putting undue emphasis on) study notes. Each daily reading is appropriately sized for both length and content.

I recommend this Bible to anyone who is interested in using a structured reading plan to read the Bible. I think going through it in the chronological manner presented here would be a pretty cool way to do it, and probably more engaging than a lot of other plans. It's priced low enough to make it an affordable addition to your own library (it's a good 2nd Bible, not a primary Bible) or as a gift.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Book that changes lives, January 22, 2009
By
This review is from: 24/7: A One Year Chronological Bible (Hardcover)
I'm making a shift after 10yrs from the OT/NT/Ps/Prov daily format, so we'll see how it goes.

The preface is extremely off-putting, because I'm not interested in the trendy 24/7 catchphrase. Nor do the modern ancient woodcuts draw me in. They remind me too much of Sunday school color pages--I used to get corrected for making multi-colored sheep.

NEVERTHELESS, once you get beyond the marketing fluff, the content is challenging and potentially life-changing. I love that the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters, and that the breath of life inspires us throughout time and space!

So begins 2009... what sort of Revelation will happen in the next 364 days?

5.0 out of 5 stars Tyndale House did a great job, January 9, 2009
The 24/7 Bible is divided into 365 daily readings that take you through the Bible chronologically, or as the slipcover describes it, "you can read the continuous narrative of the Bible." For example, when you read about some of the events in David's life 24/7 will include any Psalms that David wrote during that period. In Genesis you will read about Noah's descendants and right after that you will read the same genealogy from Chronicles.

The Bible is small, approximately 5" (width), 6.5" (lenght), 1.6" (thick). The text is single column and the font is a reasonable size and is comfortable for my almost 44 year old eyes to read. There is an outer margin that is large enough to write notes. The inner column (or gutter) is not too bad although I would prefer it to be a little wider.

All in all, Tyndale House did a great job with this Bible. The size is perfect for taking anywhere (in a bag or putting it in a desk drawer at work) and the text is readable. The included slipcover should help protect the softcover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compact Book, Thin Pages, January 17, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 24/7: A One Year Chronological Bible (Hardcover)
This volume is small, which makes it good for travel. It has some good graphic art, making it look user friendly for GEN X and Y readers. The down side of a compact Bible is that the type is small and the paper is thin (the ink bleeds through from the back to the front of the pages). The format is the same as the NLT Chronological Bible also from Tyndale. I read the Bible through every year. This edition is good for daily devotions, but not for Bible study (since the order of the books is altered for the sake of chronology). I like the NLT translation. It is easier for me to see measurements in feet and miles, rather than cubits.

4.0 out of 5 stars good, June 4, 2011

This review is from: 24/7: A One Year Chronological Bible (Hardcover)
The Chronological Bible is just as it was described, but I was sad to see that the font is so light, thus not so easy to read. This is why it sometimes doesn't pay to get a good deal on the net. You THINK it's just what you want, but without seeing it, you miss details that may be important.Amazon is generally a good place to purchase items.
