Book Description

The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series November 27, 2007
24 and Philosophy is a book you just can't do without. It's all here, folks: the reason Presidents trust him; how Jack cuts through the lies and ambiguities; why he puts his life on the line for others; and how he knows which knee cap to blow out to get that all-important next lead. With the help of twenty "24 crazed" philosophers, you'll figure out what makes this guy tick, and much much more.

  • A witty, but philosophical exploration of the popular television series 24, now in its sixth season
  • Addresses pressing ethical issues relating to torture, terrorism and warfare
  • Raises fascinating questions about knowledge, loyalty, and suspicion
  • Explores in-depth the character and behaviour of Jack Bauer
  • Written by philosophers who are all serious fans of the show

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book is a witty exploration of the methods and motivations used by characters in the highly charged television drama and how some questions can be answered in our own lives." (Colleges.com)

From the Back Cover

The Los Angeles Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) is on high alert now that 24 and Philosophy has been released to the public. Better hold your breath as such dangerous philosophers as Aristotle, Hobbes, Kant and Nietzsche infiltrate the CTU. Join them as they investigate Jack Bauer, asking the big questions of philosophy.

Along the way, we’ll want to know why the American Presidents trust Jack Bauer and whether they ought to? What does he have to know to cut through lies and ambiguities? When he saves lives by risking lives, is he justified or just lucky? When he puts his life on the line, is he crazy or courageous? And how could he know which knee cap to blow out to get that all-important next lead?? With the help of this volume, you don’t need a security clearance to learn about philosophy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wish I could take a course under these folks., October 14, 2009

This review is from: 24 and Philosophy: The World According to Jack (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series) (Paperback)
This is definitely a book for fans of "24". It is a series of articles by serious academics examining one of the best shows on television. There is a brilliant analysis in nearly every article with referrals to scenes from the first six seasons. It is like watching the shows again and making you want to pull out your DVD sets (I have seven now) to reexamine each episode. It is clear that the writers have an understanding of what "24" is all about and were I still teaching, I too would use the show in my government classrooms. This book would also be encouraged for outside reading.

This review is from: 24 and Philosophy: The World According to Jack (The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series) (Paperback)
I sent this as a gift to my Mom who is a die hard Jack fan for Christmas. As more of my family joined us for holiday visits, everyone was drawn to the coffee table where this book as proudly laid out. Everyone was drooling over this book and wanted to flip through it and wanted to know where I got it so they can go out and buy it too.
