4.0 out of 5 stars Callery at his best, December 6, 2006
This review is from: 24: Seasons 4 & 5 [Original Television Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Overall, a great mix of the urgency and somber tones we've come to know and love from both Sean Callery and the show itself. Highlights include the "24 Main Theme" which sounds even better (and slightly longer) this time around than on the first soundtrack, "Logan's Near Suicide" which was coupled with Gregory Itzin's brilliant performance this season, and "Lynn McGill's Sacrifice" which shows the heroism and tragedy of the situation Lynn finds himself in.

In addition, there's a few tracks which stick out(and that is in no way a bad thing). "The Name's O'Brian - Chloe O'Brian" is a great mix of Sean Callery and John Barry, and it is hard to understand why he has gotten so much heat for it. "Logan's Downfall" is another good track which samples a bit of "Palmer's Theme" and the listener is really able to get a taste as to how big the differences between the presidents were.

Despite being labelled "Seasons Four and Five," there are two(three if you count the main theme) tracks from 24: The Game which featured a full orchestra. There is also a track called "C.T.U." from the third season which is really cool.

My only complaint is that it wasn't longer. "Mandy's Plan" is good and all, but Callery left off the music when Jack captures Mandy in the parking garage. But still a must for any 24 fan or for anyone who wants to feel like Jack Bauer on their way to work.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little more polished, but a little less intense, November 30, 2006

This review is from: 24: Seasons 4 & 5 [Original Television Soundtrack] (Audio CD)
Cooool - I didn't even know the next "24" album came out until I spotted it yesterday. The music for the show relies on sweeping strings for moments of sacrifice/heroism, horns for the call of duty, and piano for the moments when Jack has a chance to breathe. The percussion is more often rock or techno than military. Electric guitar usually indicates a villain.

The opening theme sounds a little different here than on the first "24" CD (seasons 1-3), because this version was recorded for the "24" video game, as are a few other tracks. This time, rock ("Collette's Arrest") and industrial ("Mandy's Plan") pop up more in the overall sound.

"Logan's Downfall" is as dramatic as the closing scenes of season five, when the psychotic handpuppet is removed from office. "Jack's Women" is a really good piece of sad, symphonic music. Then comes "The Name's O'Brian - Chloe O'Brian", a James Bond-ish guitar line over a slick beat. Composer Sean Callery caught some flack for the tongue-in-cheek appeal of this track. "Mission Briefing" is also from the video game, and it sounds a lot like John Williams' movie music.

"Lynn McGill's Sacrifice" is also good, with McGill played by Sean Astin from "Lord of The Rings". Realizing he's the only one who can stop the nerve gas from reaching the CTU briefing room, he lifts Frodo Baggins and carries him to the steps of Mount Doom, and...wait...

For action music, this CD doesn't really equal the first "24" CD until "Infiltrating The Sub". "Jack Storms The Gas Plant" is the standout, with various orchestral modes moving around on a fast beat.

In comparison, the music gets more layered each season. The first two seasons have the most urgent tracks, like "Coliseum Finale", "Terry's Death" and "Helicopter Chase". Volume 2 brings the sadness, but Volume 1 has more anger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the first!, March 8, 2007

I really enjoyed this second helping of Sean Callery's work on 24. Although, i wanted some more of my favorites to be included in this volume, it was still worth the money! I guess I will have to wait for the next volume, if we ever see another, to see if some of my favorites are finally included on the CD.
