4.0 out of 5 stars Great B-24 footage!, May 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: B 24 at War/Series 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
From the cover: The Mission: An excellent account of a W.W.II complete combat mission at an 8th Air Force base in England that comprised part of the greatest air armada in the history of the world! This film features the 44th Bomb Group under command of Col. Leon Johnson in preparation of the typical B-24 mission. It includes all details from fueling, bomb loading, engine starts, take-off, flak, enemy fighters, target strikes, and return to base. Several crash landings are seen, including a one-wheel landing by Lt. Griffith. This is a comprehensive, "true-to-life" account of combat mission activity. Report From the Aleutians: This color film from the archives is a rare account of the Battle of Dutch Harbor, occupied by the Japanese. Our bombers based on Adak bombed Kiska incessantly. This is an historical account of the only elimination of enemy occupation of U.S. land. Narrated by John Huston. This film is a document of the deprivations suffered by our military, including many branches of service, to construct an airfield on Adak. These men were exposed to the rigors of severe winds and weather including hail, sleet, pouring rain, fog and squalls. Sequences show B-24's, P-38's, and P-39's taking off on heavily water covered runways. The Battle of Dutch harbor includes camera action taken from inside a B-24. Bombs are dropped on Kiska from both high and low altitude to knock out Japanese who would go underground during a raid. A remarkable document of U.S. military dedication, bravery and skill. END

2.0 out of 5 stars B-24's At War Series Two, January 24, 2002
By

This review is from: B 24 at War/Series 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Pretty disapointing. The video is a compilation of two previously released documentaries. The first part is a rather crude "home movie" of the 100th mission flown by the 44th Bomb group. The film was shot not by official combat photographers but apparently by members of the group themselves, and assembled by the Group's Photo Officer. There is some narration by Col.Leon Johnson, who was with the Group at the time and had earlier won the Medal Of Honor for his part in the first Ploesti mission.Interesting for B-24 fans. The second, and longest, part of the video is an official Army Air forces film titled"Report From The Aleutians".Familiar to most World War Two video collectors,it depicts the activities of U.S. aviation on Adak.Filmed in Technicolor, this print is rather murky.B-24 footage is somewhat incidental, but there are good scenes of P-38 Lightning,P-39 Airacobra, and P-40 Warhawk operations as well.I can only reccomend this video if you are particularly interested in the subject matter.
