Book Description

It happens to every homicide investigator. Even the best of the best. Sean O’Brien never thought it would happen to him. But there was something about the look in the accused man’s face that O’Brien could never quite forget. It was a look that haunted him in the dark hours somewhere between sleep and consciousness. Even a decade later he remembered the man’s face when the jury delivered the guilty verdict.

Although the evidence was overwhelming, something in O’Brien’s gut told him there was more to the story than surfaced in court, more than what was found at the murder scene. But caseloads mount and time has a way of blurring the lines of desperation in a man’s face until something surfaces. For O’Brien, it happens when he receives a call from Father Callahan.

The priest hears the confession of a frightened prison inmate, and he learns that a man facing lethal injection in 84 hours is innocent. The lead investigator on the high-profile case was his old his friend Sean O’Brien. And now O'Brien has a chance to right a horrible wrong. But he has less than 84 hours to uncover clues to a crime that sent an innocent man to death row.

Appeals have expired and the man will be executed in 84 hours unless O’Brien can find evidence that points to the real killer. The 24th letter in the Greek alphabet—Omega—may provide the key to uncovering the killer’s identity.

Evidence may not lie, but evil does, and when the original killer comes out of his lair, O'Brien is in a race to save two lives - the man on death row and his own.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Lowe's heated follow-up to 2009's A False Dawn catapults former Miami homicide detective Sean O'Brien into a desperate race to save the life of a man he helped send to death row. The near-death confession of prison inmate Sam Spelling comes just 84 hours before Charlie Williams is scheduled to die for the murder of his girlfriend, Alexandria Cole. Spelling names the killer and the location of the murder weapon in a written confession that never reaches O'Brien. Meanwhile, Cole's killer tries to cover his tracks with fresh murders. O'Brien enlists the help of an FBI friend, a couple of former police colleagues, and a renowned defense attorney, but basically is on his own against a wily opponent. As the clock ticks, O'Brien must break a few heads and many laws as well as try to decipher a mysterious if contrived clue, an omega (the 24th letter of the Greek alphabet), to the killer's identity. 2.0 out of 5 stars Where is the proofreader? May 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Trying to get through the typos and mistakes is so annoying. I can't understand why these self published authors can't shell out for a proofreader. Has anyone ever heard of the word "consciousnesses" as in "he lost consciousnesses"? How about the character Johnson telling his wife they'll go to Florida when they're already in Florida? Or how about the DOC guard wearing black "books" on his feet? Have only read 20% of the book so far and am not sure I can take much more of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good storyline - very difficult to read July 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
After struggling through this book I felt compelled to write this review basically for the author's sake. The storyline/character was good but it was such a struggle trying to figure out some of the words that it made it a challenge to read. Not only were there spelling errors but some of the words didn't make sense.

That said, I did buy the first book and the second book - will I buy the third - not sure. I would definitely invest in a good editor who can edit your books before they are published. It would definitely be to your advantage.

4.0 out of 5 stars action-packed thriller March 20, 2010
Format:Hardcover
At the U.S. District Court in Orlando, the assassin fires one shot at the chest of convict Sam Spelling who is set to testify against a cocaine trafficker. Father John Callahan visits the dying Sam to receive his last confession and give last rites. Sam tells him that death row inmate Charlie Williams never killed his girlfriend; he names enigmatically someone else and states where the weapon can be found that killed Alexandria Cole. In less than four days, the State of Florida will execute Charlie.

Father John's friend former cop Sean O'Brien led the Miami police investigation into the South beach homicide. The case never felt quite right though the evidence obviously hung Williams. Now Father John tells him of Spelling's puzzling death bed confession. The clock is ticking away as an apparent innocent man is about to receive the lethal injection while the real killer of the model is murdering other people to insure no link to the Cole homicide is found. O'Brien with some assistance must figure out what or who is the only clue to identify the culprit, The 24th Letter.

The second O'Brien mystery (see A False Dawn) is an action-packed thriller in which the countdown to the execution hangs over the heads of those who now believe the death row inmate is innocent; especially excruciatingly difficult on the former Miami homicide detective who led the official inquiry. However, the inclusion of implausible incidents to heighten the suspense ironically detracts from an otherwise fascinating tale. O'Brien fears he will be too late to prevent the execution by Sunshine State officials who ignore his plea for a stay so he can complete his second (this time civilian) investigation into the Cole murder.

2.0 out of 5 stars Editor needed March 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The synopsis made me think this would be an enjoyable read; it was not. There were too many typographical errors and misuse of words, e.g. champaign for champagne, that just frustrated me. On top of that, the story would not end; everytime I thought it would end, there was a plot twist. I ended up feeling tired. I would not recommend this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Errors April 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a good book. Not great, but good. The typos and formatting errors were very distracting and it was hard to have a consistent read when you have to stop and figure out what the word was supposed to be, or to ignore the repeating of words. The beginning half of the book was a little slow, but the last half went very fast. The conclusion to the book came very fast! There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me interested. Overall, good book for free.

3.0 out of 5 stars The 24th letter/kindle version April 30, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Good story...the worst editing I have ever seen. Many, many, sentences were edited, then rewritten incorrectly into the kindle version...many misspelled words. I don't know what the hardcover version looked like, but the many errors made the story look cheaply done.

I've read the other 2 books in this series and they weren't nearly as convoluted and poorly written. That's a shame, because I liked the story overall, but there were too many errors (grammatical, plot, typos) to recommend anyone buying, or even obtaining, this for free.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing ending and full of puzzles
This was my 2nd Tom Lowe book I've read. The reason I didn't rate 5 stars is because this one is in 3rd person instead of 1st. The story was well put together regardless. Read more
