Editorial Reviews

Santa Cruz product Miguel Migs gently but firmly tears the roof off with 24th St Sounds, his latest example of the sunny, uptempo chill music known as "deep" house. As practiced by Migs, Ben Watt, King Britt and others, the style takes the raunch of classic house and replaces it with a polished cocktail vibe, creating a hybrid your parents might even enjoy. Not to say that it doesn't kick; 24th St Sounds is a smooth ride, but it's also a relentless--and fantastic--dance record. Migs knows how to blend, and his positive energy would sound just as good in a grimy New York basement club as it would at a Riviera beach bash. He starts hot, leaving the soft melodies in the background on floor stompers like "Waiting." After a slight lull, he picks up again for the luminous "You Can't Stop," and backs off with the spare, borderline electro of Trevor Lovey's "The Bounce." The second disc, culled from Migs's studio catalog, sounds more thrown together and lacks disc 1's drive and cohesion. But really, it's hard to get too much of 24th St Sounds, as long as you're in a good mood (or won't mind being put into one). --Matthew Cooke

5.0 out of 5 stars Miguel can absolutely do no wrong, October 22, 2004

That about sums it up. Here, his second "nrk" release, he does not fail to disappoint. This is quite possibly his finest release in a very, very long time. Those of you familiar with him, already know what to expect. If you have followed him from his Naked music and Petalpusher days, you already are in the know. Expect beautiful, deep, sexy and fluidly flowing house. Very similar to the kind of stuff that Dolce Vita puts out, or a more refined Hed Kandi if that does anything to further explain things.

I too now live on South Miami Beach as a reviewer below me, but am a native of and am originally from San Francisco. Having lived in San Francisco and grown up there for over 25 years before coming here, I saw many dj/club styles come and go and was there just as Miguel Migs and others, such as Mark Farina, Kaskade and other Mushroom Jazz stalwarts were really blazing trails. It's fantastic to see them continuing to do so and deliver outstanding and far superior products over those of their counterparts.

Definitely check this out. You will not at all be disappointed and I wager it will be one that you reach for time and time again. It is absolutely one of my favorite purchases in quite some time. If you are new to Miguel Migs, check out his other nrk "Nitelife" release, as well as all of his Naked Music cd's too. You will definitely thank yourself for doing so.

5.0 out of 5 stars San Francisco Sounds - New York Style, October 8, 2004

I am inspired to write by what I hear from CD 2, and don't get me wrong, CD 1 captures me. But, the expanse of Miguel's talent is truely evolving on CD 2. Personally, I did not realize both Julius Papp and Miguel are from San Francisco as I am. Hey, I live in Miami and we all know New York is the bomb when it comes to kulture, but it says a lot when the DJ is able to syncopate the current sound of Latin House, Jazz, Disco and Funk into timeless beats with a rhythm that is not to be laughed at. The release is brillaint, and anyone who listens will remember those fabululous days of Shalamar and will be looking forward to the new season in dance music.

4.0 out of 5 stars On the fence??, August 17, 2005
This review is from: 24th St. Sounds (Audio CD)
I worship Naked Music and have been previously dissapointed with previous migs projects. 24th St. delivers in a big way if you already like Bare Essentials and Carte Blanche. Disc 1 is a new favorite for me despite a jazzy, muzaky start. Make room for dance with this on your Ipod, you'll be completely overcome by the sound and the style of this incredibly endearing combination of great beats and sensual motives. I was on the fence about this one as I don't love everything I have by him. I'm telling you to jump in if you love your music naked. This one's a really good time! Don't listen to anyone, try it for yourself and see. Something for everyone here, perhaps you'll just love it all as much as I do!
