Who says Finnish bands can't rock?, October 20, 2008
This review is from: 25 Golden Greats (Audio CD)
If you haven't heard of The Hurriganes, you're not alone, but these guys were HUGE in Scandinavia during the 70s-80s. Think Dr. Feelgood/Flamin' Groovies with rudimentary English skills (lyrics sung in a form of hybrid English which actually adds to the appeal of this stripped-down music). They didn't mind lifting classic rock songs and putting a slight turn to them and calling them their own either but that's another thing that makes a lot of these tunes sound so original. The songs on this CD represent earlier work and range from revved-up 50s classics to grungy garage numbers like Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, a two-chord rocker The Ramones would have been proud of. Albert Jarvinen (RIP) was an outstanding guitarist in his time and is on fire on a lot of these cuts. The Hurriganes (`Ganes' to the Finns) turned out a nice little ballad when they put their minds to it as well, as evidenced by the wistful My Only One with bassist Cisse Hakkinen (also RIP) on vocals.
