If this wasnt impressive enough, in 1947 a very young Doris Day also began her transition into motion pictures, initially signing to Warner Bros. A score of musical and dramatic roles followed, with her career reaching new heights as a result of a glowing performance alongside leading man Rock Hudson in romantic-comedy Pillow Talk (1959). For this role she was nominated at the Oscars for "Best Actress". Soon after Ms. Day had established herself as Americas #1 box-office attraction retaining this prestigious position with further releases such as Lover Come Back (1961) and That Touch of Mink (1962). During the late 1960s, Doris began slowly but surely taking a step back from Hollywoods fast paced showbiz world. Leaving the big screen for a succession of hugely popular prime time television shows. By the mid 1970s, she was all but ready to leave the glitzy spotlight of Tinseltown for the serene comforts of Carmel-by-the-sea. Publishing her memoirs in her #1 best-seller Her! Own Story (1975) was her way to close one chapter in order to begin something just as exciting and rewarding. The now homely star focused her new found time and energy on a cause she had felt for many years very impassioned over. This was the provision of animal welfare for which over subsequent years she was instrumental in establishing animal charities like her current day organisations the Doris Day Animal Foundation and Doris Day Animal League. No matter whether the Doris Day of today [who fast approaches her landmark 80th birthday in 2004] ever chooses to return to the world of entertainment there is no denying her legacy of music and film will remain forever young in the hearts of the people who discover it.

Brilliant compilation of movie songs,
By
This review is from: 25 Movie Greats (Audio CD)
With the possible exception of Barbra Streisand, Doris was the most successful singer-actress of the twentieth century - and I'm referring to those who were equally regarded as both singers and actresses. This compilation features many songs from movies that Doris starred in, but it also includes songs from other movies that Doris recorded simply because she wanted to.Although this is not a greatest hits package, it features several songs that became big hits for Doris including Move over darling (a UK top ten hit in the sixties), Whatever will be will be and Secret love (both UK number one hits) although Black hills of Dakota and I'll never stop loving you are among her hits that are missing despite their use in soundtracks. Of the movies that Doris starred in, Calamity Jane is represented by Secret love and The deadwood stage. Other songs from her own movies included here are It's magic, Move over darling, Tunnel of love, Pillow talk, Teacher's pet and Whatever will be will be - but a lot of her own movie songs have been omitted to make way for covers of other movie songs including Let's face the music and dance, Three coins in the fountain, Singing in the rain, You'll never walk alone, The sound of music, White Christmas and High hopes. It is worth noting that many of these songs are also available on another UK compilation, 41 Hollywood greats, which is also a collection of songs from the movies. This is a magnificent collection but if you're looking for the definitive collection of Doris Day's songs from the movies she acted and sang in, this isn't it. Indeed, I'm not sure that such a collection has been released. Just enjoy this collection for what it is - a brilliant selection of movie songs generally.

Fantastic!!,

I love this one!! Doris Day has a way of taking a song and making it her own, so that the listener never wants to hear anyone else sing it!!!This CD contains a great mixture of songs---fun ("Anything You Can Do", "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles"); inspirational ("You'll Never Walk Alone"); love songs ("When I Fall in Love", "Secret Love"); a nice little Christmas number ("White Christmas"); and some of the greatest musical numbers ever written ("The Sound of Music", "It's Magic", "As Long as He Needs Me"); and that's just the beginning! Twenty-five wonderful Doris Day recordings on one CD!! What could be better??? Doris Day just makes me smile :)

As much as I like Doris Day's reditions of these songs, I wish this disc would've included more of her persoanl movie songs, such as "Send Me No Flowers" and "Do Not Disturb". I realize those songs are available on other cd's, but it would be nice to get them all on one disc. But "Que Sera Sera" and "Secret Love" are still gems. And "Move Over, Darling", which was written by her son, Terry Melcher, is my favorite.
