Sting has been writing tunes at his peak for longer than almost anyone else around. From the flaming hot Outlandos D'amour all the way through Soul Cages, Summoner's Tales, and If On a Winter's Night, he puts out disc after disc of sophisticated, tuneful music with some of the catchiest riffs around, all without losing focus. He has expanded sideways into reinterpretation of renaissance music, and also reinterpreted some of his own music in a symphonic context. It is a lot of ground to cover in one disc, but Best of 25 years does a good job from a number of perspectives. First, the songs. Of course, since this is a "best of" disc, most everything is familiar to fans. There are so many good songs in his catalog that choosing the songs to include must have been difficult. "If you love somebody set them free", "We'll be together", and "fragile" are all obvious choices from his seminal "Nothing like the Sun" album. The remixes are nice, but honestly don't add a ton to what you have already heard. The magnificent and spare "Soul Cages" album is represented by only one cut, but is a great one--"All this time". Other tracks like "Fields of Gold" and "Desert Rose" are certainly high points as well, but the real joy for me was hearing the live cuts that end this compilation. "Heavy Cloud, No Rain" is such a fantastic song with a thrumming baseline, a steady beat and an interesting structure. It gets a great bluesy treatment live, and I liked it a lot. "Demolition Man", a song that I have always liked but never loved gets a really great rocking live version with the guitars up front, ringing and screaming. It sounds meatier than the studio cut, and Sting's voice is much more mature than for the studio version, and I think it sounds better. This is now my preferred version of the song.Read more ›

Ok, this package is very nice and is indeed the utlimate hits collection. The remastering is subtle and overall a great package - if you don't have his albums/CD's. But I wonder how many people are out there that would shell out this money that wouldn't have bothered by his regular CD's! I've been a long time Sting/Police fan and I can tell you - what really would have been awesome would have been a comprehensive collection of Sting's rarities. He has over 40 B-sides and contributions to tribute CD's and soundtracks - and there are some spectacular tracks in the group. One of his cool early B-Sides - "Another Day" has never appeared on CD (other than a live version). I think a collection of this nature would have had some great potential and hopefully will be considered some day.

First, I am a huge Sting fan from the 70's. I saw the Police when I was a teenager and the band left an indelible impression on me, mostly because Sting was just so amazing. Second, I have seen him more times than I can count--having followed him to NYC and to San Francisco to see him play live. Third, I think he's one of the true greats when it comes to song writing. BUT...I think I've reached my limit. To repackage all his solo work and then charge a premium for it is simply ridiculous. Three CDS and a DVD for more than $100? I'm shocked. But not as shocked as I was when I went to buy tickets for Sting's show in support of this work--$300 for two tickets! All of this just got me thinking that this is an exercise in commerce as opposed to art. Or, the man has finally lost it. It's been years since he's released a relevant set of tunes. His dabblings in Celtic folk music were simply dirge-lilke and dull and beyond seeing Sting sing with a live orchestra, that Symphonicities CD is the LAST thing I would put on when wanting to hear Sting sing the hits. So I'm confused by this boxed set. There's really nothing new here for the ears to listen to, other than a simple remastering of the tracks, which--face it--really doesn't sound all that different. Maybe Sting should have just charged $60 for this set since that is now his age. I just think that since he did the Police reunion tour that Sting has simply run out of creative gas and we've been handed nothing but dribbles of artistic energy as opposed to the gorgeousness and lush songs that he was capable of a decade ago. I still love the man and I'll forever cherish him for his contributions, but the heavy price tag for this set and the show accompanying just smells of capitalism infringing upon the artist's soul. Who knows, maybe this is all his label's doing or he's overstepped his donations to the rain forest. But whatever the reason, I don't feel stung in the least by what's being offered.

I'm very happy with this album. I've been a Sting fan since DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES. Most of my Sting albums are on CD format but when vinyl made a comeback, I started tracking down near mint vinyl versions of his albums. So far, I've tracked down DREAM..., NOTHING LIKE THE SUN, BRING ON THE NIGHT and SOUL CAGES. TEN SUMMONERS' TALES and MERCURY FALLING continue to elude me. So when this album came out on vinyl format and it contained selections from said albums, I knew I couldn't let it pass.

I would also like to commend AMAZON for their trust and confidence in a loyal customer. When I wrote them to complain about my first purchase being too warped on one side (the other side was good), they immediately sent a replacement. THANK YOU, AMAZON. I already wrote this separately but I'm writing it again. I'm a raving AMAZON fan. May you continue to thrive.

For this price he better come and play an unplugged concert at my living room... and cook a gourmet meal... and clean the house!! This is really overpriced versus other box sets. Even more if you consider that this is mostly already released material... In fact, if it was unreleased material is... Read More
