2.0 out of 5 stars Not very satisfied
Yes, the book does provide you with 250 continuous line designs; however, I couldn't find more than a few that I would even consider using. The patterns are very child-like and may be appropriate if one was quilting for a baby or child. The book is nicely segmented by area (bird, animals etc.) Very few instructions, only the basics. For me, it wasn't worth the price...

Thank you Laura Lee Fritz!
My husband ordered me a Handiquilter for Christmas, which depends
on the stitcher having some motor control in tracing continuous quilting patterns. I have very little practice in drawing, so when I saw this book of continuous line drawings, I bought it immediately. I would have bought this book for all the drawings of Pelicans if for no other reason.
Laura gives great instruction on how to set up an overall pattern, by choosing a focus design, then filling the background
with complimentary patterns. She also offers tips on the density of background stitching so that it does not become jumbled.
The book is presented clearly, and the continous line patterns are numerous. These are nice, solid, nature insprired patterns that I forsee using more than once. (I hate it when the designs are so cutesy that you never use them.)
I am already using this book to train my hands and eyes. I've tried sketching some of the leaf patterns onto a quilt border, and I trace around the continous designs with my finger to get the feel of them.
If you are already an accomplished machine quilter and have substantial art background, you won't need this book. But it is perfect for me in helping me in my quest for nicely designed machine quilting.
:)

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific inspiration for machine quilters, July 25, 2002
This review is from: 250 Continuous-Line Quilting Designs: For Hand, Machine & Long-Arm Quilters (Paperback)
This book is completely unique in the world of quilting designs. All are intended for use with a sewing machine, although it need not be a longarm quilting machine. I did fine with several of them on a regular Bernina. I am sick to death of precise, cutesy feathers and hearts. This book was like a fresh breeze coming through, letting me see machine quilting in a whole new way. Not only have I used the designs, I have been able to invent some of my own using inspiration from this book. Most of all, it loosened me up. Straight, perfect lines are NOT always best. These naturalistic, freeform designs were just what I needed. AND the book is so [inexpensive], how can you go wrong?

For me, it wasn't worth the price and had I had the chance to see it before purchasing, it would not be in my library. A good choice if you want a way to quilt outlines of animals, plants, and birds.

This book reminds me of the Japanese methods of hand quilting. There are many patterns and details to assist even a new quilter to make interesting patterns. I was delighted to find all of the patterns in the book and they are broke down into groups.(Birds, sea life, ...) Anyone wanting to incorporate designs into their work would be pleased at this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars comtemporary designs, April 10, 2002

I prefer more traditional quilting patterns. This book has many animal and items of a more comtemporary nature. If you are looking for feathers to quilt, this is not the book for you. It has some nice designs for clothing and provides some ideas for quilting placement. A good book if you are looking for something different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of ideas, December 12, 2001

There is a little text at the front of this book but it is basically a compendium of original designs. They are broken into categories like Home & Garden, Birds, Flora & Fauna, Domestic or Woodland Animals, Under the Sea and Textures. The designs can be single motifs or actual scenes. Many can be grouped to create even more elaborate designs. Some are quite simple; others would require a fantastic eye or marking the quilt. If you have searched for something different and non-traditional to add to your quilts, this book should be in your library.

This book is full of mix and match designs that are very easy to follow. Any one can do these arrangements. There are designs for sports, recreation, animals, flowers and textures. I got out some fabric right away and jumped in with new enthusiasm!

3.0 out of 5 stars only so-so, January 2, 2002

Personally I wasn't very thrilled with this book; I did find a few usable designs when looking for non-traditional ones such as cats and frogs, but many I felt were kind of sloppy; I had to make some modifications.
