5.0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Regimental History, November 26, 2009
This review is from: The 25th North Carolina Troops in the Civil War: History and Roster of a Mountain-Bred Regiment (Hardcover)
I have read more regimental histories than I can count or remember. These histories usually focus on a few interesting battles or people with some, very often many, gaps in the history of any particular regiment. Of all the regiments I've researched the 25th North Carolina is the one I consider my home regiment. My GGGF Williamson Garren and my GGF Joseph Youngblood were both members.

Carroll Jones' book THE 25TH NORTH CAROLINA TROOPS IN THE CIVIL WAR, is the best of the best. As an author myself I know how difficult it is to research and document accurate history of a regiment. Very often the sources we use contain inaccuracies. Carroll Jones has done an outstanding job of sorting out all the factual details and presenting them in a cogent manner.

When one undertakes the wrting of a regimental history one of the most difficult, expensive and time consuming parts of the work is the assembly of exhibits. This book contains an incredible collection of photographs, illustrations, documents, maps and every other conceivable exhibit associated with this regiment. Jones has included everything I've seen on the regiment in the past 20 years and a lot I had not seen. The expense and effort behind the assembly of the exhibits alone must have been tremendous.

Perhaps the most notable thing about this book is the comprehensive nature of the work. I once thought I knew this regiment better than any other living person. After reading Carroll Jones book on the 25th I now realize that the best I could ever hope for is second place. Carroll Jones is now the world's leading expert on the 25th.

Congratulations to Mr. Jones on your quintessential example of a regimental history. This masterpiece will be remembered and read for many generations to come. We all owe him for his efforts in documenting and preserving our heritage and history.

Thank you, Carroll Jones for a job well done.
