The OTHER songs from the film...,
By Nick O. (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 25th Hour (Original Score) (Audio CD)
Blanchard's score is beautiful and haunting, a perfect match for the film that also stands well on its own. But for those of you seeking the other songs from the film, here they are: song, artist, album. If you can't get all these albums, I think your best bet is Essential Mix: Classic Edition by Grandmaster Flash, which features two songs from the film and is a great dance / party CD overall."Warm It Up Kane" -- Big Daddy Kane -- Very Best of Big Daddy Kane "Flava in Ya Ear" -- Craig Mack -- Project: Funk Da World (also available as CD single) "Put the Music Where Your Mouth Is" -- Olympic Runners (note: one of the songs played early on at the club) "White Lines (Don't Don't Do It)" -- Grandmaster & Melle Mel -- Message from the Beat Street: Best Of "Cavern" -- Grand Master Flash / Liquid Liquid -- available on: Grandmaster Flash, Essential Mix: Classic Edition (note: this song, which you can hear during the club scene, is the one played on the film's trailer) "Bra" -- Cymande -- available on: Cymande and on Grandmaster Flash's Essential Mix: Classic Edition (note: played during the bathroom kiss scene) "Dove" -- Cymande -- Cymande "The Message" -- Cymande -- Cymande "The Fuse" -- Bruce Springsteen -- The Rising

Good soundtrack: dense, atmospheric, compliments the film...,

I don't get the beef from so many concerning this CD. The music is subtle mood film work and it deftly fills in the spaces and fleshes out the film in question, which- while far from being a 'great' film, or even one of Norton's or Lee's best- is a damn nice watch. Ok, it's not Troubleman or Superfly, but it's well constructed and taut. Good music to idle about the house to- or drive to. It's just a sweet lil soundtrack. Ever get the feeling that Norton has a long list of 'Directors I need to work with,' and he's working his way down that sucker? Just me, eh? OK- Now then, if you're looking for the DJ hits from the club scene and about half the hits in here seem to be digging for them... as everyone and their grandma has mentioned, you should go buy the Cymande CD- it's only about 13 bucks or so in here. Get the full-blown 'Cymande,' Cd. The song Bra is the one from the paquin/Hoffman kissing scene in the bathroom (and It's been sampled by damn near everybody- most notably in De la Soul's 'Change in Speak,' track 3 off their first album- 3 feet High and Rising). Dove is the song you can barely hear from the scene wherein Norton and the Ukrainian mobsters talk in the basement (most notably used as an interpolation in The Fugees 'Family Business' off their seminal album The Score...) And yes, The Message is in there too and it too has been done to def by the hip-hop community. I give Blanchard a two-thumbs up for this understated work. So many soundtracks beat you in the head with pathos- soft tinkling sad pianos and lush swelling strings- they scream- YOU MUST CRY HERE!!!! YOU WILL BE HAPPPY NOW!!!! There's no subtlety and that bothers the hell out of me- I hate to feel like I'm being molested by a composer. Blanchard never panders, he whispers and insinuates- makes for a good listen and a nice watch!

5 stars for Cymande,
By A Customer
This review is from: 25th Hour (Original Score) (Audio CD)
I pleasantly surprised that Cymande's music was heavily featuredduring the Club scene of 25th hour. Not only was the song "Bra" featured during Anna Paquin's close shot when she was dancng through the hallway, but so was "Dove" and "The Message". Its interesting how the DJ of the so called club was said to be the hottest thing around. He simply cut and scratched through 3 famous Cymande songs. All these songs were hits in 1972. That's 31 years ago people. But the songs sound fresher today than ever. Cymande is simply one of the best funk fusion bands ever to record. Spike Lee knows it. I know it. And know maybe if your paying attention, you know it too. Check out Cymande "THE SOUL OF RASTA" and get yourself lifted with this newest "best of" collection.

If your are wondering about the great music from the Club scene with Anna Paquin dancing in the hallway to "Bra," and the DJ spinning the track "the message."
And the track "Dove," playing in the background while Ed Norton visits with the Ukranian mobsters in the basement of the club. Well, All these tracks are by Cymande (pronounced sah-mahn-day) This music has been remastered and just recently released on an album called - Renegades of Funk. This album is completely remastered and has some unreleased bonus tracks. Finally an album is available that does this great band justice. It also has some great photos of the fusion funk, jazz, soul and reggae breakbeat band from the early seventies. Enjoy.

Great Score - but where's the Soundtrack?,

I bought this CD recently because I loved the score to the movie but also because I loved the music featured in the movie. I was disappointed to hear that only the score was featured - I'm dying for the Soundtrack and can't find it - if anyone knows where/what to find please let me know by email.

I believe the person who wrote the review about their professor liking the score was referring to Berklee, as in the highly competitive College of Music in Boston. I realize it's not Yale or Berkeley but that persons comment can be considered somewhat relevant. It's hard to believe someone who grew up in New Haven could be unaware of the Boston school, not to mention a Yale grad unable to recognize the different spelling.
Just listen to the CD, it's a great score!

people to discuss what colleges are good and what aren't, I'm glad that you went to Yale man, It is a great school, I'm sure you worked really hard through many obstacles to get there, or, you pulled it off Bush style, whichever way, it really doesn't matter, what matters is what you think about the music on this CD, I personally enjoyed this very much, it is one of my favorite in not my favorite score out there, to all the people who wanted the soundtrack, sorry, not here, this is perfect for people who have an appreciation for scores, it is very different from traditional orchestra scores, it has that certain jazzy/world music sound to it, every track on here is beautiful but right now, my favorite is the "Open Title", it just takes all the aspects of the entire soundtrack and places it into one song, give it a shot, but remember, this is not the soundtrack, this is the score

Although the score is fabulous, where is the incidental music used in the film. They are some of the best songs, so, is there going to be a soundtrack for the movie and release those songs. I suggest just adding them ala bonus cd to the score.
