Book Description

2 and up
Go beyond “A is for Apple” with an alphabet book that builds character. As children learn and review their ABCs, they discover positive actions they can perform with their own small hands—like applauding, building, giving gifts made with love, helping, planting, recycling, and volunteering. These are simple things even toddlers can do for themselves and others. The message throughout is that everyone, no matter how young or how small, can make a difference in the lives of those around them. The book ends with big hands clapping. A warm, affirming book for the home, childcare, or preschool.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K - From A to Z, Paratore presents a number of ways in which children help every day, using their hands to feed fish, make music, plant gardens, recycle bottles and cans, etc. Unfortunately, the author struggles with restrictions imposed by the alphabet format, and some of the actions, such as "kindle kindness," "nestle," and "x and o," are a stretch. The artwork is bright and cheerful, reflecting the text's optimism. However, there is a noticeable flaw in the illustration for E: a young girl holding an earthworm has six fingers. Even without this mistake, the pictures seem a bit inconsistent: while the children are drawn in a fairly realistic style, some of the animals are very cartoonish. The youngsters appear stiff and unnatural, and their hands, a natural focus of the book, are puffy and poorly drawn. - Suzanne Myers Harold, Multnomah County Library System, Portland, OR
