It is hard to remember how unusual these performances were thirty-something years ago -- since the novelty of these ideas has worn off by now, and the chops of the players set a standard that others on the newgrass scene reached. But beyond innovation and technique, the music on this CD is refreshingly alive, exuberant, and full of feeling. All in all, these early Barenberg / Trishka / Statman / Wernick / Kosek / Miller / Martin tracks represent an American musical milestone, and one that has stood the test of time!

I find this CD to be lively and varied, keeping things interesting even though there is rather an emphasis on banjo. Good tunes!

Great bluegrass fiddle and banjo music, with a few surprises thrown in. Too bad it's out of print. Hopefully, Rounder Records will reissue it in its original form. Play this one in the car for a rollicking road trip. I don't have the names of all the members of Country Cooking in front of me right now, but they are all first rate bluegrass musicians, and have been featured on many other CDs and vinyl albums put out by Rounder over the years. Any bluegrass fan already knows the names (except me, of course), and if I were a radio station, I could go bluegrass full time! In short, if you see a copy is this one, GET IT!
