I replaced both spindles on my John Deere mower with these Stens replacements and when I started the mower up the first time and engaged the blades I was amazed at how smoothly the repaired mower deck was. Smoother than the day I brought it home from the dealer. I had always had a complaint about the vibration on this mower, even took it back to the dealer once, but they just told me "well some mowers shake, others don't". Now, finally, it doesn't shake. I especially like the idea that you can put a little grease into these spindles. That should help them last a long time.

Signed,
Happy in Delaware

Replacement spindle assembly required a bit of preparation before installing but I gave the item five stars because of the overall quality of the replacement part. After a quick stop at the hardware store, I had the spindle ready to install in a few minutes. Like other reviewers I had to replace the mounting screws with another metric 1.25 thread hex head, be careful to purchase the correct length of replacement mounting screws (not too long).

The mount for the blade was properly threaded and accepted the old bolts nicely. The bolt holes for the mower deck connection did need to be tapped, so I also purchased a Metric #8 x 1.25 tap (I alread own a tap handle, otherwise you would need a tap handle). The tapping was surprisingly easy as the aluminum threads were easily cut with the steel tap. I used a little bit of olive oil to lubricate the tap. A previous reviewer used an old bolt as a tap, but I would spring for the extra $7.00.

To save some aggrivation, I installed the blade onto the spindle before installation, otherwise you have to work underneath the mower deck. The installation consisted of pushing the spindle assembly up from below, hand tightening the four bolts to hold everthing in place, then tightening each bolt a little at a time using a socket wrench. Be careful not to over-tighten as the steel bolt can easily strip the aluminum threads, this would necessitate the use of a locking bolt on the downward side of the spindle.

Now install the pulley with the bottom of the bowl-shape facing down, the spindle accepts the locking nut from the old assembly. Be sure to secure the blade (to keep it from spinning) as you tighten the pulley lock nut. I used some rope, but could also have used a pair of locking pliers.

Lastly, the instructions call for lots of grease before using the mower. Be sure to grease the spindle before installing the belt cover as it will hide the lubrication tip.

Another reviewer noted that the base isn't tapped to receive the screws. I was going to use a tap and die set but I still had the original screws ( mine are tapered at the end ) so I figured since the base is aluminum I could probably thread it in w/o tapping the hole first. Before trying to attach to the deck I just oiled the original screws, threaded them in by hand until they were getting a bite at a good alignment and then used a ratchet. Then I backed them out and put the spindle on the deck and again hand started the screws until I could tell they weren't going to ream the threads and tightened with ratchet. I'm no mechanic, but that seemed to work for me.

Ordered three spindles for my John Deere L120 mower which were advertised as Stens brand. Received one Stens and two Oregon Outdoor Equipment spindles. Some very obvious differences in the design form, though the fit and function are basically the same. Bugs me though that I didn't receive three of the same make; either brand would have been fine though since they are advertised as Stens that's what should have been shipped. Time will tell if there is a difference in the design and quality / longevity of these designs. They both seem "good enough".

BTW, I did purchase a set of 12 new thread forming bolts (not self tapping, there is a difference) which I would highly recommend. While removing I broke two bolts on my bad spindle (overheated) and I'm sure that one or more bolts would break had I attempted to reuse. That would be a big ah *^%#! as my father used to say. I applied never-seize liberally to all fasteners which should make the inevitable disassembly (for replacement, maintenance, blade sharpening) easier.

Lastly, make certain you pack these with grease. There is no documentation that is included and it's really not that obvious that they are not pre-greased. Pump them up until you see the grease discharge or when it gets difficult to add more.

As stated in other reviews, the holes are not threaded but the existing bolts bit in and threaded it with no issue at all. The zirc fitting is a great addition to the factory unit, so this one should last a good long time. Works great, seems to be well balanced and a few mows since this was installed were flawless. All in all, I'm good with this.

*Edit 11/26/13-

Two full mowing seasons later and it's still working as new. No issues, keep it greased and I imagine it will continue to perform as advertised for years more. Happy so far...

This spindle fit as described and was less expensive than purchasing just the bearings from John Deere. Don't even bother trying to rebuild the stock spindles, they're throw away. Buy this one instead.
