Keep the Bonfire Burning!,
By
This review is from: 29 Golden Bullets: The Very Best of Bonfire (Audio CD)
I've been a big fan of Bonfire since I discovered them in 2000. Whether you classify them as "Pop metal" or "Hard rock" they are the embodiment of a classic 80's hair band. They've been rocking since 1981 and it doesn't look like they plan on quitting anytime soon. Its just a shame they never made it in the US market - it makes it very hard to get copies of their CDs!

This two disc collection from the German Metal Band Bonfire is well worth the extra time it takes to get as an import. The sound quality is better than most CDs and is mixed really loud. I just have to sum up much of what this band is about is the description of a few of the more mind boggling tracks. There is a lot to discuss. The most amazing thing I came across was an amped up version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Sweet Home Alabama. It sounds almost nothing like the original but it has crazy guitars and has to be heard as it has way more energy than the original. Wild Dixie starts with what sounds like Civil War Era marching drums and then becomes a very good Southern Rock tune. It is great to here something unique. How many Germans are doing this? I can't see The Scorpions trying. There is also a great Southern style Christmas song called Because Its Christmas Time. A nice mix of guitar and piano and the vocals are great. The lead singer sounds like a mix of Richard Marx and Klaus Meine from The Scorpions. Other notables are a good cover of Billy Squier's The Stroke. It sound more like the original than Sweet Home Alabama. It was already great so enjoy it. A fantastic cover of a never released Demo Kiss song called Sword and Stone is what I deem a great look into what Kiss might have done with it if they ever actually released it. Any Kiss fan should be able to tell right away that it was originally a Kiss tune. Bonfire is so damn good at doing great things with covers. They can make it sound original or do a faithful replication. The song You Make Me Feel is the best of Bonfire's melodic softer side. It is here that you can draw direct comparisons between Bonfire and their fellow countrymen The Scorpions. If you listen to The Scorpions Send Me An Angel you will hear the definite similarities in vocal style. Lastly Under Blue Skies is first class metal with a great guitar riff and haunting chorus. Bonfire might not have ever "made it" and been wildly popular but as I have matured over the years I've come to realize that popularity is not an indicator of quality. The only thing that matters is the connection between you and the music.

Two great CD's well worth the money, a friend of mine introduced me to this collection awhile back. Naturally, I got hooked and had to get one for myself. From ballads to heavy rockers, these guys have it all. A pleasure for listening to, start to finish.
