This phone requires a little set up and is terrific for the hearing impaired. My wife had brain surgery and lost the hearing in her left ear. This phone has been very helpful in allowing her to hear better on the phone. I don't know how it would work with an extreme hearing loss in both ears, but for her it works great. The amplification is loud and even on the speaker phone, the sound is clear. Great product!

When I had ordered this phone I had just hung up with my Mother, who couldn't hear every other word I said. Frustrated, I searched for a phone to amplify my incoming call for my Mom. She said that it sounds like I am in the same room when we talk on the phone. So no more "Eh?!" or my getting frustrated.

My father has severe hearing loss in both ears. Even with hearing aids, he only has 50% of his hearing at certain frequencies. He's 81, and not only needed a phone to be simple to use, but he needed it to be clear, and loud. I read the reviews on this phone when I started looking for a phone for people who were "hard of hearing" and for the most part people liked it. So I gave it a try. I'm so glad I did. My dad hears better with the speaker feature than with the handset, but he can hear with that on amplify too. My mom likes it because she is not hard of hearing, so she can turn the "amplify" feature off. I had no idea how isolated my father felt when it came to the phone, until I set this up for him and tested it. It was like opening a door that had been closed a very long time. The look on his face! He was happily surprised it really worked. And he can understand how to use it. He then called my sister, my brother and my uncle. :) The handset is...slippery. It may be hard for some to place properly back on the phone base. I will say that. But I want to say thank you to the people who left reviews, and I hope my review helps someone else. To see my father so happy, is just, wonderful. (I just realized this is giving me a "generic" name, and I'm usually skeptical of those reviews. I've never left a product review on this before, but if I knew how, I'd totally leave my real name. I just don't know how... :)

How to make this work well,
By Noreen Fertig (Bradfordwoods, PA, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: GE 29579BE1 Amplified Corded Phone for Moderate-Severe Hearing Loss with Large Buttons & Caller ID (Office Product)
This was the only phone that worked well for my 93 year old severely hearing impaired mother. We tried several others which offered more "clarity". None matched this one. To make it work well it is best to know which frequencies the user can hear. If in doubt set the high range on the equalizer to high (many elderly cannot hear these tones) the middle range to medium and the low range to low and adjust from there until it works well for them, Use your cell phone from the next room on iinitial set up. Although my Mom had very little hearing she preferred to have the amplification off. It seemed to be too loud with it on. It seemed as though it was the equalizer that helped.

Bought this for my mother,on Amazon. The ring volume is good and loud. The volume for the ear piece could be louder. The "amplify button" increases the volume OK except it is distorted with alot of surround noise. ( static )This seems to be the best phone I could find for hearing impaired. The print out on the caller ID is good as well as the large dial buttons.

This is a great phone for the price - the clarity is outstanding and it was really easy to set up - it's unbelievably loud on the high settings..

the amplicfication is very good, but my 93 yr old mother has difficulty placing phone back in the cradle; she has left it off the hook numerous times--so for an elderly person with hearing needs, the phone works well for hearing needs, but is poorly designed for persons with eye problems.

I bought this phone for my 87-year-old mother, who has difficulty hearing on a standard phone. Unfortunately, although it is loud enough, the sound quality is poor so she doesn't use it.

We were fairly pleased with the easy set-up for this phone and the amplification, although the sound quality makes you feel like you're talking inside a barrel. The instructions manual told us very little, so I don't even know if we were making use of all the features. Then, after purchasing the phone on May 2, on June 15 the amplifier quit working. This was past the June 2 return date, and my deaf father was suddenly without a phone. Very Disappointing and FrustratingGE 29579BE1 Amplified Corded Phone for Moderate-Severe Hearing Loss with Large Buttons & Caller ID!

I bought this phone for my 76-years-old mother who has a severe case of macular degeneration. I programmed her top numbers into speed dial and put a cordless phone next to the GE corded phone so she could walk around the house. It would be better with lighted buttons but it was tailored to the hearing impaired, not the visually impaired. I would suggest an accompanying hands-free phone but I am happy with my purchase.
