I've been wanting one of those old-fashioned picnic tables that has separate benches so that we could move them around and use them for different things if we wanted to. Also it's impossible to seat people in wheelchairs at tables that have the benches attached! But it seems they just don't make nice, simple things like that anymore. So I bought this kit thinking my husband could get it assembled in time for the 4th of July.

Well, on looking over the instructions on the box, I had a sneaking suspicion I might just be able to do it myself, since there is no measuring or cutting - especially no miter cuts! - involved. All I had to do was ask the guy at Home Depot to cut 4 of the 20 2"x4" boards to the specified length. The rest is all done with an electric screwdriver.

I would've got it all done in less than an hour if I hadn't wanted to paint the wood first. I used untreated fir studs - I just didn't feel safe using treated wood around food, no matter how much less toxic it's supposed to be than the old kind - and I used two coats of a redwood-colored latex to protect the wood from weather and carpenter bees. Seriously, waiting for the paint to dry was the hardest part of the whole process! Once that was done, screwing the boards to the frame only took a few minutes - I literally did it while making dinner (OK dinner was frozen pizza, but still!)

The plastic used for the frame is very thick and sturdy, and is screwed to the wood with lots and lots of serious wood-screws, so there is no wobble at all and the finished table is very sturdy. I expect it is going to last for many years of family gatherings.

Oh, the other thing I like about it is the way the bottoms of the plastic legs slide very easily across the deck without scratching it.

I was a little apprehensive of the purchase at first since it oviously looked plastic with a more modern style and the $80-100 price tag was almost as much as a full/complete wooden table kit. However, I broke down and paid the extra for the clear reality that maintenance over the years would be almost non-existent. Upon arrival, I was happy to see the inviting packaging, the well laid out instructions on the box, and the sturdy blow mold construction of the support members. I decided to spend a bit more and go with composite decking (~1" x 5.5" x 6') for the table/bench tops and treated pine supports underneath to again avoid future maintenance. Changing up the board dimensions made me miss one hole on either side of the table supports, but it was as sturdy as anything. I used 6 planks on the table and 3 on each bench. The composite needed a bit more support in the middle, so I improvised with standard picnic table cross supports in the middle of the undersides. I also curved and routered the ends like the picture and made it look much more refined than a boring square table. Plank spacing also looked nicer at 1/4" as long as your boards don't warp.

I love how the benches are extra wide and detached from the table which makes it alot more versatile for varying situations. All in all a great table and I was willing to spend more for something that would look nice for ages and save me countless hours in staining and weather treatments for years to come. Recommended!

Opted for constructing the 8' table using 2X4s, in this case treated wood. Altho the legs are resin and relatively light, in combo with the wood makes for one heavy table and bench set. The plus is that it is solid, unlike some of the portable light-weight tables offered. As with other reviewers, found that reinforcement was needed for the center sections of the benches and table both. This doubled the time necessary to complete since the supports needed to be cut and fit to each piece individually. Suspect that the 6' and 4' would NOT need the support, but you lose some utility in terms of seating capacity.
As an aside, this was my 2nd order on this, the 1st having come absent a table leg. I thought I had received another deficient product when tallying the hardware, only to discover the 'missing' screws were located in a leg cavity, whereas the bench screws were in plastic bags loose in the shipping container.

I built a table from this kit 4 years ago. It was a good looking and sturdy table. Over time, one of the legs has now become severely warped and the table is now wobbly. Four years is not terrible, but I downgraded to 3 stars because I really expected the plastic legs to outlast the lumber. However it does give me pause as to whether I would use the kit again were I in need of a new table.

Great value and very simple assembly. If you have one or more boards go bad, simply replace one or all of them. I recommend going 6' on the table and benches...we left ours at 8' which makes them seesaw if one person sits at the far end.

I bought the set to use as an ammo reloading bench. It worked well but there was some flex in the top when I used my reloading press. I stiffened the top with another 2x4 next to the upper section of the legs that the top attaches to. There is still some flex but I am not using the table for it's intended purpose. It looks good and works well.
