4.0 out of 5 stars Check system requirements before ordering
Looks like a great product, and it's a lot cheaper than the 5-port ones. Be sure you can meet the requirements listed on the manufacturer's web site, which I have copied here. (IOGEAR...)

For PC users:
* Windows® 98SE, 2000, ME, XP
* 300 Mhz or greater
* Available PCI slot
For Mac users
* Mac G3 or better
* OS 8.6 to...

1.0 out of 5 stars Bug in chipset, IOGEAR is investigating
After installing the card it would instanteously reboot my Windows XP machine with no warning or proper shutdown. Escalated to IOGear and Tech. Support responded that they have a major bug on the last chipset on the card that they have not fixed. Recommended I return it for a refund.

iogear tech support recommanded to return this card for GIC250U (5 port version) because of bug in the card. I guess got lucky with mine and it seem to be working fine with 80G external iomega drive(usb 2.0).
my system: win98SE/AMD Athelon 700mhz/Asus MB/Ali chipset.
happy purchase so far.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cause hang on G4 Mac, July 25, 2003

This review is from: 2port USB 2.0 Pci Card for Bothmac & Pc (Personal Computers)
Installed this card on my G4 with 10.2.6. It works straight away without installing any driver for USB 1.1 devices. Then I installed the latest driver downloaded from IOGear web site and restarted my system. My system hang when I connected a USB 2.0 card reader to it. It consistently hang my system and I had to restart every time the system hang. I returned the card yesterday.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you don't have USB, this card is for you, November 30, 2002

If you have an older computer that does not have USB ports you probably are missing out on dozens of useful upgrades like digital cameras, scanner, gamepads, and printers to your system. But not anymore if you get this card.

Installation is not terribly difficult. Just open up your case, find an open PCI slot, pop this in and you are in business. Since I have a Macintosh I really cannot talk about the installation of drivers for Windows users, but it took just 5 minutes to get up and running on my ancient system. After that I've basically never had to deal with it ever again unless I'm changing what I have plugged into the card.

The card offers two USB ports, but you can plug in a USB hub for more ports. With more and more useful devices coming out every day, USB is becoming a necessary part of your computer.

Pro's:

Easy installation
Useful upgrade

Con's:
Would be nice to have more USB ports than just two. In fact that is the only reason for only getting four stars instead of five.

After installing this card, it prevented my Compaq Presario 5423US from properly turning shutting down. Instead, it would restart my system to point where even hardware power offs would not work. After reading other reviews and doing some searches on various newsgroups, I know this probelm is not limited to Compaq computers. I purchased a GIC250U for another computer, and I have NO complaints/problems with that version. I highly recommend you NOT BUY this card.

Here's what I got from tech support from IOGEAR:
I would stay away from that particular card. We do have some drivers that fix some machines, but I would rather go with the GIC250U for now. Also just a tip. Dont buy any cards made by ALi. Stick with the NEC.

Some of the other reviews made me apprehensive, but I decided to take a chance...and I'm glad I did. I'm running a Dell GX150 with XP Pro with Service Pack 2. I opened the case, plugged in the card, put things back together...and it was great. Check Device Manager and the card was there, ran a few tests...works great! Absolutly no problems. I did not even mount the CD...XP did everything.
