5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, cheap, and extremely strong
Very strong plastic composite pieces. You definitly need a power saw (miter, table, circular) and an electric drill (about 60 screws that need to go into raw wood). Most efficent build is with just 8 2x4 studs, at least 8'. For a 5.5' ~ 6' shelf, cut 4 pieces of lumber off at 29.5", what is left are the 4 frame lumbers 5'+ and the 4 shorter shelf pieces for the lower 2...

3.0 out of 5 stars Brackets don't fit 2x4's snugly
I was disappointed to see a 1/4" gap between the 2x4 and the bracket on the longer dimension. (My 2x4's are 1-1/2"x3-1/2", but the opening is 3-3/4" wide.)

Very strong plastic composite pieces. You definitly need a power saw (miter, table, circular) and an electric drill (about 60 screws that need to go into raw wood). Most efficent build is with just 8 2x4 studs, at least 8'. For a 5.5' ~ 6' shelf, cut 4 pieces of lumber off at 29.5", what is left are the 4 frame lumbers 5'+ and the 4 shorter shelf pieces for the lower 2 shelves. The other 8 pieces cut at exactly 3'.
For $40 (with new wood) I built my first shelf, which I loaded w/ 1,500 lbs of granite, marble, and porceline tile for my next bathroom rip out. NO problem w/ the weight, could easily double that.
I bought 2 more of these kits and the workbench kit (will review that after receiving and assembling).
Width issue is not a concern, I am going to make a 6'x6', the shelves are 4 2x4 studs, no chance of bowing at long lenght.
Understand another reviewer's concerns about the mounts not fitting snuggly, but that is a well thought out plus. You can use scap lumber, which is often bowed due to moisture issues. Plus you do not have to fight to insert the last screws.
To the manufacurer, I would suggest dark colored or black screws and not the shinny silver ones. With stained wood this could be attractive enough for a dorm room or a utility room.
Most important the screws provided are decent grade, have not had one strip off yet, and they provide extras.
Simple and practical product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Need more than a saw and a screwdriver, May 13, 2004

This is a great product. You can build these shelves with just a saw and a screwdriver, BUT you better have a lot of strength in that screw driving arm, a great eye for right angles, and a lot of time if you plan to cut all of those two-by-fours with a hand saw. I suggest that optimal tools for the job are: tape measure, angle, level, circular saw, and power drill with a phillips head or a power screwdriver.

Instead of buying off the shelf units that may or may not fit the space intended, and which cost substantially more, you can build customized shelves that fit the space perfectly. If you live in an urban area where storage space is tight and getting the most out of every square foot is important, then this product can be useful. I buy the cheapest two-by-fours available and use the shelves for storage in my basement. Note: the shelves are 16" deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars HOW EASY IS THIS?!, January 3, 2006

My wife bought me the shelf kit for Christmas from my Amazon wish list. I just put it together this weekend and had a blast doing it! I built it 4' wide by 6' foot tall. The whole thing ended up costing about twenty five bucks in additional lumber. I submitted a customer photo of the finished product. The instructions were great to me because they left a little room for you to make changes in the design if you want or need to. If you must have rigid step by step instructions from beginning to end, you may have a little trouble. The end result was a very sturdy shelf that I feel is as strong and much larger that what I could have purchased anywhere else.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to put together, and strong., March 13, 2007

I've built 3 units with the shelf links, and I've been extremely pleased with the results. Comes with the screws, and easy to follow directions, including how to measure the "in-between" 2x4's for a snug fit. Hardest part of the whole process is picking out the best 2x4's at Home Depot or Lowes...

Everything to make "shelf building" simple. It's flexable and easy to configure to just about any dimensions you might need. If you can saw a straight line and know how to use a screwdriver you are in business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop searching for a garage organization system, January 9, 2007

Do not waste your money on expensive shelving systems, for less then $100 the Finley 2x4 basics shelf links will make you the envy of your neighbors. I am a young single female who searched all the major chains for a garage organization system until I found this an Amazon. The system gives you the flexibility to layout a storage plan. Additional, Finley offers a workbench system. Because I do not have any tool or a truck to get the wood, I did have a handyman install the system and can not speak to the difficulty. However, he did report how easy the system was to use and it took him less then 2 hours. In total with the shelves, wood and labor, I spend around $300. I cannot tell you how many of my neighbors have stopped me to ask about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I bought 6 boxes of these sets........., December 3, 2006

I love them, but in stead of using 2x4's for the shelfs, I upgraded and used 2x8's instead, they are stronger and it was a little cheaper. I sided my whole side of garage with them, and still had some pieces left over. The side I did was like 17 feet long. I got rid of a lot of junk as well as organized the rest. I was able to shelf over my Shopsmith Mark V and it fits right in the hole I made for it. I'd get more if and when the need arises. You should too! If you used real nice wood and took the time to sand and stain, this could make a niece inexpensive entertainment center for your home theatre system too.

We needed an inexpensive way to store lots of wood in the garage. So, we purchased the 6-pack to make an 8-foot (full face cord) log rack. The brackets are VERY sturdy and the log rack was simple to put together -- used two links for the 4-foot side rails, and slid two underneath the two 2x4's in the middle for extra support. Side rails were a little wobbly, so used the remaining two links at the top of the 4-foot side rails for added strength. Since the log rack will be used to store wood in the garage during the winter, I wanted to be able to easily disassemble it this spring -- the only thing that has screws is a 2x4 across the back (attached to the back two side rails) to brace it against the wall. I'm extremely pleased (and ended up stacking much more than a face cord!)

I bought two set of these and made a combined shelving system almost 18 feet long and 6 feet high. Extremely easy to put together and very functional. I used about 100 dollars worth of retail 2x4's from Lowes, but you can probably find cheaper lumber. I just had the guys at Lowes cut all my wood down for me so I would have to do that many cuts at home. They even look pretty nice there in the basement. Definately a great deal.

I bought 4 of these units last spring from Amazon for less than $18 each with FREE shipping, and I have no regrets. Built my shelves 6'H x 4'W using 10 2x4x8's per unit @ 1.88 per stud. The shelves I built with the help of this product should last for many generations. Thanks Finley.
