5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any wood stove operator
OK, so this is only a thermometer so I won't write a long review, but I have to say that this little device helps me operate my wood stove better. It helps me know when I have the stove "overfired" or when I need to add more wood and turn up the oxygen. We've named the zones "Papa Bear" (too hot), Mama Bear (too cold) and Baby Bear (just right). Yeah . . . I know, but...

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this product
I bought this gadget for my woodstove to help me monitor the temperature of the stove. It lasted exactly one month and the coil came apart. I definitely won't buy from this stove again. I gave it one star cause I couldn't go lower.

I purchased two of these for our wood stoves at the cottage. They really help you burn at a safe level which in turn conserves wood and avoids excess creosote as they say. The only suggestion, and I don't know if it can be done, is to make the arrow a bright color so it is easier to see in dim lighting conditions. I would rather not turn on a light just to read the stove temperature. If the arrow were brighter, I would definetely give it 5 *****

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful, not perfect, October 16, 2011

I bought this thermometer for use with my Jotul wood stove to monitor stove temperatures. The stove literature says that the stove should be operated between 400 and 600 degrees (F) for best results and the break in instructions recommended 3 fires to temperatures of 200, 300 and 400 degrees, so I decided I'd better have a thermometer.

I initially bought an Inferno stove _pipe_ thermometer at a stove store because that was all they had. Once I read the instructions for that thermometer, they said it wasn't recommended for stove _top_ use, so I bought this thermometer online. The recommendation is apparently because of the temperature range markings, not because of any difference in the thermometers actual performance. Once I had the chance to compare the two, both of the thermometers read very similar temperatures, this one has the correct ideal range (400-600) labeled on it. The stove pipe thermometer would be fine if you use the temperature, not the colored zones marked on the thermometer. The two appear to be identical except for the painted range.

I'm a tool geek, so I also bought an infrared thermometer (Kintrex) to check my two stove thermometers. The IR thermometer works quickly and seems to be very accurate. It shows that when the stove is warming up, the Inferno thermometers lag by as much as 50-100 degrees. Once the stove temperature has stabilized, they agree with the IR measurement very well. Another thing the Kintrex thermometer shows is that each of the four corners of the stove can be a very different temperature as the stove is heating up. This variance can be 100 degrees or even more. Once the stove is up to temperature, the four corners will be within 10-20 degrees of each other.

As long as you remember there will be a lag while the stove is heating up and the fact that one corner's temperature alone isn't going to be an exact representation of the whole stove temperature, this should be a useful tool as you learn to use your stove.

This magnetic thermometer helps me control the wood stove temperature and minimize creosote in my chimney. Also helped with the break-in of my new Jotul wood stove. If you operate a wood stove I would highly recommend this unit. It is also made in the USA!

After a chimney fire, a chimney sweeper recommended a thermometer for our wood stove to help us keep it burning in an optimal range of temperature. This one works great. I checked it against my infrared thermometer and it seems to match closely within 50 degrees F or so. That's good enough for me, since the temperature reading can be affected by where you measure the temperature on a wood stove. Now I don't have to keep on reading the temperature with my infrared meter, which takes a lot more time to do.

This nice looking stove top thermometer for my catalytic wood stove was exactly what I needed to be sure I was switching from regular burn to catalytic combustion when the stove was hot enough. It works great. It's easy to read yet unobtrusive. I like the fact that it is made in the USA and the service was excellent - very prompt shipping and delivery.

I recently replaced my stove top thermometer as it was erratic and would lock on a temperature and then jump 150 degrees up when enough pressure built up to uncoil the spring. This new Inferno thermometer immediately has me impressed. I have a thermocouple that I used to check it's accuracy and it was consistently within 10 degrees (F) of the thermocouple temp. My old thermometer was not helpful at all...I set it on the top of my Vermont Castings Encore wood stove that has a top loading feature. I like the magnetic thermometer right on the top so you can gauge the heat and know how hot you need it...

Since I don't have any calibration equipment to confirm how hot my stove really is I've got no idea if this temp gauge is accurate. That said, it works just fine mechanically and the indicator goes up and down smoothly without catching on anything.

The only issue I have is that the diamond shaped indicator is hard to see if you're more than ~6 feet away or so. If it was white or some other bright color it would be great but that steel color just blends right in. Not really a huge deal though honestly.

This thermometer allows you to see if the fire you have in your wood-burning stove is hot enough to not create soot, and not too hot as to be unsafe. Relatively small and thin, it's hardly noticeable and it can be removed easily, as it is magnetic. We have learned to control our fires' temperatures better with this gadget.

I bought this thermometer because I had just bought an Ecofan and found out I needed to monitor the temperature of my woodstove surface. I found the thermometer more useful than the fan. My woodstove is pretty basic and not state of the art, but I found by using the thermometer I am able to regulate the heat output more efficiently. I believe this thermometer is a must have for anyone with a indoor woodstove for efficiency as well as safety. I am glad I bought it.
