Format: Paperback
3 AcesFinally we're lucky enough to get a novel about the American road, the loneliness, the exhaustion, the police harassment, the crooked trucking company owners and warehouse receivers, and the killer storms and blinding whiteouts, written by an author whose knowledge comes from having driven those roads for many years as a long haul trucker.
And a novel about gambling, the addiction, the excitement, and the life and death dangers of playing for really high stakes by an author who has dealt craps in Atlantic City and seen high-rolling men and women broken over the casino tables.
These two stories are skillfully blended by a new novelist, Richard Ide, who waited until he had experienced life on the edge of several worlds before sitting down and giving us this story--and what a story.
It comes roaring off the pages with the power of the red Peterbuilt Model 379 with its two-hundred-and-fifty-inch wheelbase into which protagonist Abner Weaver sinks his life savings. But if Abner is driving the truck, he is being driven by memories of his time in Vietnam and the Montagnard tribesman who sacrificed his life to save Abner Weaver's.
And then there's Dawn Carlisle, who, when we first meet her as she hitches a ride with Weaver, seems nothing more than an alcoholic tramp on the run from a lousy past. But Richard Ide has a surprise for us because it turns out Dawn Carlisle is a crackerjack poker player who, well into the novel, ends up being forced into playing a game of Texas hold'em so packed with suspense and surprises that it's a toss-up who is more exhausted at the end of the game--Dawn or the reader.

This one rips and rattles like a Jake break through a mountain cut - and covers a lot of ground in a hurry. PTSD, road cowboys and worse, high-stakes gambling, SOG in Vietnam and world monetary policy! There's a lot here and skillfully connected into a compelling first novel by Richard Ide. Fun imagining who you would cast in the leads as Abner and Dawn - be a heck of a movie. If Ide has another book in him, you can sign me up now.3 Aces

It is somewhat of an unspoken rule that the title and the cover can be instrumental in the success of a book, especially a new novel by an unknown author. Those two elements are crucial in drawing the reader to pick up the book. Next, might be the story synopsis on the back cover, the `hook' that grabs the potential reader as a `must read'.
As a reviewer, I chose "3 Aces" from the list offered me based on the `hook', so the third element of this equation was, indeed, instrumental. I was fortunate as the title and the cover simply do not do this book justice. "3 Aces" is a five-star `sleeper' which shuns even a designated genre. It's too all-encompassing for that restricted labeling.
Richard Ide's writing talent is immediately apparent in the page and a half prologue. Four pages later at the end of Chapter One, there was no putting this book aside. I was hooked. I was also in for one hell of a road trip; not just in the cab of a flaming red Peterbilt eighteen-wheeler, but through a man's tortured mind and compassionate heart. What Mr. Ide was able to do in "3 Aces" is a rare accomplishment in creative writing. Three in-depth stories, each one almost capable of standing alone, have been skillfully woven into one epic chronicle.
Enticed to choosing this book for review by having spent two years on the `road' in a `big truck' myself, I anticipated a trip down memory lane; of revisiting the majesty of the land, the routes, small towns, truck stops and the politics of the loading docks. I got all that and so much more.

Content (or not) in our little four-wheelers, most of us may not ever have wondered about the trials, tribulations, and joys - if any- of the 18-wheeler drivers that we maneuver around every day. Richard Ide mixes this self-discovery odyssey of his hero with the real details, wherein the devil lies, some terrific poker scenes, a good woman, an ultimately clever and satisfying plot, and an insider's view of the trucking industry, where everyone lies, all together to make a fully-realized first novel. We persevere with Abner as he jousts with his semi tractor against storms, deadlines, competing drivers, dispatchers, owners, and above all his past. Rounding out the cast is the third ace, an unlikely mutt, the conscience of driver and his lady.
That Ide draws on his own remarkable history, just as we understand that this is not a schooled writer, makes the action and atmoshere the more credible. Abner is rough and tough, but not profane, as he too pushes against his limitations.
Much more than an adventure yarn, yet not aspiring to literary Pulitzerdom, "Three Aces" is a very worthwhile read.
