Biography

Journeying has long held sway over man’s mind—the idea of travel can be as seductive as traveling itself, though never quite as instructive. The story behind Bombay Dub Orchestra’s new album, Tales From the Grand Bazaar (Six Degrees Records), was created over many years throughout five countries. Wherever Andrew T. Mackay and Garry Hughes might have started, they ended up ... Read more in Amazon's Bombay Dub Orchestra Store

Product Description

Bombay Dub Orchestra rolls out its 2008 second album, 3 Cities. Both Hughes and Mackay traveled to Mumbai and Chennai to record with the cities' premier musicians and vocalists before returning to London to mix the album. 3 Cities is where their cinematic soundscapes meet Indian Classical and electronica featuring a huge cast of over 75 musicians. "An absolutely dream-inducing brainwave -Billboard"

Review

" A recording of lush, sensual Indian "down tempo" that will stroke the senses and enamor the soul... the results are beyond sublime. With its variety of textures, arrangements and moods, this double CD is an intoxicating and seductive tapestry of memorable themes, richly-mined electronics, orchestral arrangements, and the deep pulse of space." -- Mundovibes.com

"... an absolutely dream-inducing brainwave from noted U.K. musicians Garry Hughes and Andrew T. Mackay." -- Billboard

"... a lush, trip-hop blend of Bollywood sweep and minor-keyed sinew, global voices, electronic bleeps and blungs, ancient rhythms and classical airs." -- Philadelphia Daily News

It moves in moods, effortlessly shifting from a driving bass to a melancholy sitar, violins rising and falling in time with beats that are a masterful fusion of east and west. If you've heard Bombay Dub's first album, you probably found it "sleepy" at first, but slowly got drawn in. 3 Cities has its soft side, but for the most part its more energized, more integrated, and more accessable. This isn't to say it's better than their previous album, just different. Both are among the best albums of the downtempo/chillout/mood-driven genres, and both albums don't have a single weak track in their collection. I'm addicted.

I've never written an online review, but I felt compelled to given how much I love Bombay Dub Orchestra's releases to date.

It seems the word "fusion" can be found just about anywhere these days, so I've been hesitant to apply it to the works of these particular artists. However, after listening to 3 cities I must admit that they've managed to take what seems to be two traditionally beautiful genres of music; Western/European Classical & Indian Classical and "fuse" them into something in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's unfortunate Amazon doesn't have sample clips to play for uncertain buyers. I suppose they'll have to look elsewhere online.

Either way, I really do believe this cd warrants the five stars I've given it. If you liked their self-titled debut, you'll love this. If you've never heard their music, but like classical music from Europe or India; take my word for it and purchase this cd.

Awesome CD! Would recommend it to anyone seeking a contemporary global vibe. Bombay Dub Orchestra always produces such high quality music, and this recording does not disappoint. The music is rich, lush and really stands out as a stark contrast to the manufactured pop on the airwaves today. Looking for sophistication or real flavor? Check this out!

Exotic, multi layered Indian/Orchestra, rich, trippy, chilled, one of the most innovative and sensual sound experiences out today. Fantastic! Love it.

3 Cities is a great collection of songs. It sounds like a soundtrack to a Bollywood movie. It combines sounds from a few Hemispheres. No wasted notes, no flailing guitars or runaway drum solos, just perfect for a relaxing afternoon or sunday drive.

BDO gives the listener options. One can choose to pay close attention to the music and be entertained by the tight and fluid composition of sounds. Or one can choose to be immersed in the soundscape and allow it to fuel imagination. Quality.
