Many groups have mixed classical music with a contemporary style. In the late 60's early 70's a Dutch group named Ekseption did this under guidance of master keyboardist Rick van der Linden and had some successes in Europe with the '5th', 'Air', 'Sabre Dance' and 'Peace Planet'. Though this music is not for classical purists, it is excellent if you like late 60's rock with a jazzy flavor and some mellotron added to your classical assortment.
I have been looking for years for a CD version of their first album which includes a nice little drumbit on a piece called ' Canvas'.Very 60'ish and it would have done nicely in a James bond film at the time. Too bad the sound quality lacks a little. Another nice piece is 'Partita No.2 in C minor' which sounds like you're under water in some Captain Nemo film with the way it starts out on the mellotron and then goes over into a jazzy concoction of nice keyboardwork. Not all pieces are outstanding but for the money this 3 album compilation on a double CD is well worth it for those who like something out of the ordinary. |
