4.0 out of 5 stars Sounds like ZZ Top... October 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD
"3 Skulls And The Truth" features Los Lobos frontman David Hidalgo, Luther Dickinson from the North Mississippi Allstars and Mato Nanji from the Native American band Indigenous, apparently they all met and bonded on the 'Experience Hendrix Tour'. What does this combination sound like? well in a word - ZZ Top! It's very much heavy rock blues with the guitars up front and the three sharing out lead vocals and solos. The guitar sounds are fabulous throughout -fat, heavy and rocking. I'm afraid that I didn't think there were enough good songs and I would have liked to hear them including a couple of old blues or rock and roll numbers. However, for fans of blues rock guitar there is a lot here to like and I do love David Hidalgo's soulful voice. On the first couple of listens I'll go for "Truth ain't what it seems" as my favourite track.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Disc! October 3, 2012
By MPQ
Format:Audio CD
Wow! Didn't know what to expect but found this to be a great CD. Lots of killer guitar, great vocals, and no filler. In this day and age of polished, multi track recordings it has a great raw quality about it. It sounds a lot like ZZ Top BEFORE the 1980's and believe me, that's a compliment.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Adventurous music from Hidalgo and friends December 25, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This record is like hanging out at a friends garage on a Saturday Night while the older guys are jamming. Wide open, no holds barred, a real "head cutters" session. The play it nice, and rough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A RARE GEM October 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I starting following Indigenous ten years ago when I saw them in Indianapolis, IN. Purchased the Indigenous featuring Mato Nanji earlier this year, saw them live in early September, then purchased this album as soon as it was released. David Hidalgo, Luther Dickenson and Mato Nanji are great together and create very unique songs. These are the kind of songs that grow on you...you listen once and say, hey, that's different, let's hear it again! All three men are very talented in their own right, as songwriters and guitarists; however, I am a big fan of Mato Nanji and really enjoy his singing the most - he has a deep, raw, sexy type of voice which sometimes reminds the listener of Stevie Ray Vaughan, which I think is a great compliment. Get this album - you will not regret it. If you ever have a chance to see Mato play live, go! He is even more impressive live - not much talk, just song after song, after song!

5.0 out of 5 stars When's the tour?!?!? October 8, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Received my 3 Skulls and the Truth cd last Tuesday and it hasn't left my cd player since! Every track is laden with masterful guitar work from 3 of the best guitarists on the road today. The shared vocals/guitar leads from David, Mato and Luther is a great concept that works extremely well with these Experience Hendrix Tour veterans. A definite MUST BUY!!! TOUR PLEASE?!?

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 Very Good Guitarists December 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Three very distinct guitar styles and vocals. I have enjoyed all three with their bands so it was great hearing them in a somewhat different setting. The only one that did not have to depart from his normal style a great deal was Mato Nanji but have always liked his vocals and guitar playing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant surprise. March 22, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
After seeing this was a Mike Varney produced CD it shouldn't have been a surprise that this CD deserves to be heard over and over. I've been a Luther Dickinson fan since seeing him in a small venue (the Cabooze in Mpls.) with his band the North Mississippi Allstars around 10 years ago and Luther tore it up! Since that time even the Black Crowes have loved his playing and although I usually don't get off on compilation CD's (such as Siggi Schwarz's Legends of Guitar) Varney has a way of delivering a great product. Worth the price - great find!

2.0 out of 5 stars Plain
I expected a lot more grit from this. I'm not sure why. The sum of these parts should be plenty. Instead, I'm not moved by it. It feels too normal. Read more
