4.0 out of 5 stars 3 words isn't bad at all, February 8, 2010
This review is from: 3 Words (Audio CD)
Cheryl Cole is best known for being a member of Girls Aloud but here she is on her own and the result isn't nearly as bad as many think.
1.)3 Words(feat.Will.i.am)- Not a terrible song but not the best way to start off the album ethier. This song makes it easy to assume wrongly about the rest of the album.
2.)Parachute-One of the best if not the best on here(IMO)Many fans agree Cheryl's voice plus the millitary drums backing her up are a great combo. She really shines on this.
3.)Heaven(feat.will.i.am)-Another misstep(IMO)Could have been alot stronger and is ill placed on this album.
4.)Fight For This Love- Very good not nearly as bland or bad as people like to complain.
5.)Rain On Me- A fresh sounding song from CC very nice job.
6.)Make Me Cry- A very nice alomost somewhat disco-esque song. A bit repetative but very good non the less.
7.)Happy Hour- My second favorite on this and many fans fav as well. Mid-tempo and very nice with great backround and beat.
8.)Stand Up- Fun light but very dance heavy track another nice one.
9.)Don't Talk About This love- Some say this is about her much over publicised marital issues but that is left to opinion. Very good song if a little slow.
10.)Boy Like You(feat.will.i.am.)-Not bad but another one with potential that could have been better.
11.)Heartbreaker(Will.i.am feat Cheryl Cole)-Let's make this clear this is will.i.am's song with Cheryl just saying"Your a heartbreaker" the video is great and it is a very catchy, good song but should it have been on CC's first solo effort? I don't know. All in all don't listen to it just to bash it and don't listen to people who hate on it just becuase it is Cheryl Cole. Is this the best she could have done? no, is Cheryl the best singer out there?( or in GA) no but it is a very good decent album don't judge till' you've heard it for yourself. And try to be objective when/if you do.

4.0 out of 5 stars a pretty good crossover album, June 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 3 Words (Audio CD)
Now, I only say crossover because this was Cheryl's first attempt into crossing over as a solo artist. I think that the first single released from this album "Fight for this Love" is a great representative of the sound of the album. The rest of the tracks are heavy in the "American R&B/Hip Hop" sound with will.i.am being a producer on the album and featured on a few tracks. It's also obvious that though Cheryl isn't the strongest singer especially when compared to her other GA members, she can definitely carry this album and could have potentially attempted a crossover into the US music mainstream with the help of will.i.am. But, that is still to be seen if ever it will be. Cheryl released her solo project at what I think was more than an apportune time. GA was taking a "hiatus" and she was constantly in the press regarding her personal life with many of the tracks seemingly deriving from her now ended marriage to Ashley Cole. Overall, the album is still a pop album with catching tunes like "Parachute" and "Fight for this Love" and random tracks like "Happy Hour". I get the symbolism, but seriously you guys?

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good first solo outing for Ms Cheryl, July 31, 2010
This review is from: 3 Words (Audio CD)
So, it finally happened. A member of Girls Aloud went solo. And it ended up being media darling Cheryl Cole. Everybody wondered whether her album would be any good, as it's known she isn't the strongest singer in the band.

I can tell you, this is a VERY good album, and a fantastic first outing for a girl band member. And Cheryl's voice isn't that bad either - there's some autotune here, but not a lot.

My one complaint is this album relies too heavily on Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am - he features on three tracks and his solo single which Cheryl features on is also included. A little bit less of him and more Cheryl on her own would have been better.

The album's singles all made the top five, with debut single "Fight For This Love" making the top spot and becoming the fastest selling single of 2009 in the UK.

Here's my rundown of the album:

01. 3 Words (featuring will.i.am)
The album's title track and the second single. At first, I didn't like this song AT ALL. I thought it was weird, dull and not single material. But it suddenly grew on me, and I now adore it. I complained about will.i.am earlier, but I like him on this track. He and Cheryl bounce their vocals off each other, telling a story about a couple who are approached by people in a club, and they tell them they're taken and that they have "3 words" for their partner. This song is very dancey, but keeps a pop feel. A great opening track. (5/5)

02. Parachute
When I heard the album for the first time, this was immediately my favourite. And it still is. "Parachute" was the third single from the album, to fans' delight. The track was made even better with a new radio edit that made it sound fresher. The original, though, is an amazing track and was one of my favourite songs of 2009. With it's military style drums and catchy chorus, this is Cheryl at her best. One to definitely check out. (5/5)

03. Heaven (featuring will.i.am)
Will pops up again here, and out of the three tracks featuring him, this is the worst. The song isn't bad, per say, it just gets a bit annoying after awhile. It features vocoded vocals from Cheryl, and a repetitive chorus. And I hate the way they sing "my heaven's witchu" because it sounds like they're singing "chew" instead. It ruins the song for me! But Cheryl's vocals sound nice. Not one of the better songs here, but still worth a listen at least. (3/5)

04. Fight For This Love
Cheryl's biggest song, this was her debut single, and a huge number one hit. This is another song that had to grow on me, but before long, the infectious nature of this track got to me and I was singing along! With ironic lyrics and a addictive chorus, this is a winner. I know people who don't even like Girls Aloud or Cheryl who love this song. This is a great place to start if you want to check out Cheryl's music. (5/5)

05. Rain On Me
Another fantastic track - this song is slower then previous tracks but still retains a strong back beat and some jazzy trumpets. Cheryl sounds great here, and the lyrics are very cool. The chorus is also very catchy. This is favourite of mine, and another one to check out. (5/5)

06. Make Me Cry
Unfortunately, we have another misstep here. The problem with some of the tracks here is that some of the songs are VERY repetitive. A prime example is "Make Me Cry" - the chorus is incredibly repetitive. It's good at first, but gets tiresome towards the end of the song (which is 4:35). Otherwise, I do like the verses here, and the lyrics are good, as is the music. The chorus lets down an otherwise good song. (3/5)

07. Happy Hour
A lot of people think this song is cheesey, but I think it's cute! Cheryl uses metaphors superbly here, comparing her lover to a happy hour, with great lyrics "some days I'm sweet and some I'm sour, but I can't help but drink you up cos you're my happy hour." With cute lyrics, great vocals from our favourite girl and a fantastic beat, this is a very good track. Some won't like it, but give it a try, as it's good! (4/5)

08. Stand Up
This song is a huge fan favourite and was rumoured to be the album's fourth single. Myself, I'm not such a huge fan of this. Yes, it's a good party track and Cheryl sounds great, but I find this song pretty bland. I do admit, though, that it would have made for a different sound for a single, as Cheryl has been pretty serious on her three singles so far. This is simply a fun little track to have a dance to. (3.5/5)

09. Don't Talk About This Love
And we move on from the fan favourite to the least favourite. I've seen many people making fun of this track, as it's the album's only full blown ballad. Most people say Cheryl's voice isn't strong enough for a ballad, but I think she sounds fine here. This is a sweet ballad, and a great way to slow things down. And Cheryl doesn't try to sing outside her range, you won't hear any high notes here - just Cheryl showing emotion. I have to be in the mood to listen to this, but it's still a good song. (4/5)

10. Boy Like You (featuring will.i.am)
Mr BEP returns on this track, and man, it's a stonker. The real end to the album, and Cheryl saved one of my favourites till last! This song is fantastic - it opens with gorgeous music that then kicks into a strong beat. Will doesn't take over the track, only delivering a rap in the middle and some extra vocals to complement Cheryl. Cheryl is slightly auto-tuned but it's not over the top. With great music, a fantastic catchy chorus and great lyrics, this is a brilliant song and Cheryl at her best. Wonderful! (5/5)

The album also features the will.i.am track, "Heartbreaker," that Cheryl featured on in 2008. I wish this hadn't been included, as Cheryl is hardly on it - she only sings some backing vocals, it's mostly all will.i.am. For me, the album ends with "Boy Like You."

Also, if you can, check out the b-sides to Cheryl's singles - "Didn't I," "Boys" and "Just Let Me Go." "Didn't I" is a tender piano driven ballad where Cheryl sounds gorgeous - it should have been the ballad on the album instead of "Don't Talk About This Love." "Boys" is a dancey pop song with a very catchy chorus, while "Just Let Me Go" is a fantastic dance track with a VERY catchy chorus.

My top five ranking:

01. Boy Like You
02. Parachute
03. 3 Words
04. Fight For This Love
05. Rain On Me

Cheryl did some song-writing on 3 Words - she co-wrote 3 Words, Heaven, Make Me Cry and Boy Like You.

The album itself is grey themed, with the full lyrics in the booklet. Cheryl doesn't saturate the booklet with pictures of herself - in fact there's only three if you count the cover! Cheryl looks gorgeous in all three, although the cover is a bit bizarre, I have no idea what that thing on her head is.

Overall, this is a STRONG solo offering from Cheryl, and hopefully her second solo album can live up to this. 4 stars.
