30 Pc Allen Wrench Set- SAE/ MM

Allen wrenches are somewhat of a commodity product. Out-of-the-box, most Allen wrenches will allow you to tighten or loosen a matching screw. Where quality comes into play is how the wrench performs over years of use. Do the corners of the wrench round-over? Is the wrench not accurately sized resulting in damage to the screw when tightening? And, like most tools, you generally get what you pay for.

When I purchase two of these 30 piece sets, I recognized that they were probably not in the category of a "quality tool". But, that was OK because I planned to add each set to a tool kit that would only be used in extremely rare situation - maybe 3 or 4 times over the next 10 years. It just so happened when I received this order that I had a mechanical assembly on my workbench that used 3 mm Allen screws. So, I retrieved the 3 mm wrench from one of these sets and attempted to remove a screw. To my surprise, the wrench from this set would not even fit in the screw. At first I thought that I had retrieved the 4 mm wrench, but no, it was definitely in the 3 mm pocket between the 2.5 mm wrench and the 4 mm wrench. I got out my digital vernier caliper and measured the wrench - it was 3.21 mm. I selected other wrenches (both SAE and mm) from the set, and they too were out of tolerance by as much a 0.1" - some smaller, some larger. I've been buying and using tools for over 40 years, and I have never encountered a "brand new" Allen wrench that couldn't at least tighten or loosen a matching screw several hundred times before wearing out. This set had several wrenches that couldn't perform this task even once.

To Amazon's credit, they refunded my purchase price and paid for the return shipping. Needless to say, this is not Amazon's fault. They can't be checking every product in their inventory with a "vernier caliper" (metaphor). I wrote this review (first one ever) in hopes of persuading Amazon to drop this item from their inventory. Between my wife and me, a week does not go by that at least two packages from Amazon.com doesn't land on our front porch. We will maintain this average as I'm expecting two sets of Bondhus Hex Balldrivers on Tuesday. When I was 12 years old, my father told me to never buy a cheap tool. I've got to remember to pass this on to my grandchildren when they visit me next week.

The smallest wrenches do not fit the hex-head screws I need to turn. They are not even proper hexagons. The larger ones may be OK. Not worth the shipping to return it.

Don't waste your money. These are no where near precision, in fact they'd be hard pressed to rate adequate as far as quality tools are concerned.

If you need wrenches that actually fit, spend money on a better set. Also, the case is a total piece of junk. Every time you open it wrenches fall all over the place. Not happy with this purchase, but it's not Amazons fault.

A great set at a reasonable price. It covers just about the entire spectrum of sizes. I had a screw that the manufacturer supplied a wrench. The wrench was the correct size, but the screw head wasn't. With all of the wrenches in this set there was no problem. I used the 1/16 SAE wrench on what was supposed to be a 1.5mm screw and it worked great.

Many of the keys have a slight bend to them. Some of the keys seem to be sized slightly too small (can cause stripping). The case, although an excellent layout organizationally, is low quality and the tools sometimes pop out of place. Overall, the set feels cheapy and I don't like it.

I had a 1.5mm hex and knew that was too big. Saw that this one had smaller and hoped one would fit. The smallest wrenches go from 2.5 to 2.0 to 1.5 then to 1.3 to .9 and finally .7. It seems to me the logical progression down would have included a 1mm size which what I suspect I need. Oh well. seems like this set may be useful to me someday, but not right now. I'm not sure what the popular metric sizes would be, but based on the sequence down it seems to go haywire lower than 1.5mm.

I like the way the metric is a different length then the standard. This way when you clean up and put them away there's no doubts, everything is nice and neat. I like the gray plastic box they came in and plan on mounting it on the wall eventually. I took off one star because when I opened the cardboard Amazon box allot of the wrenches were out of their slots and one had broken it's plastic holding clamp. Not good when something you just bought looks like a mess when it's brand new. If you need very small allens, this has them for a reasonable price.

This tool is perfect for any job, sizes vary from very small to big.

small one breaks and the damn box is cheap so the small ones gets lost or breaks anyways cheap crap
