4.0 out of 5 stars A Big Pen to Tackle a big subject, August 28, 2010

This review is from: 30 Days of Night: Fear of the Dark (Mass Market Paperback)
Marty thinks she has something watching over her. When she was young, for instance, something came and saved here from the world. And it has done so time and again, making her think she has an angel watching over her. The world is not populated by haloes, however, as the book also shows. While doing great deeds there are also horrible things existing out there, and these terrible twists of fate impact everything - vampires included.
Even they sometimes need to beware of the dark.

Normally I skip 30 Days of Night in anything BUT graphic novel settings because, like Hellboy, I really don't find likfe in the stories When big guns like tim Lebbon come on board I am prone to change my mind, however, because I know what one of them can do. In this case I think I chose right, because the tale had some things I enjoyed while dealing me a hand that I recognized. I had, for instance, seen the gauardian angel approach. The only thing is that I hadn't seen Lebbon do it. The same thig goes for the stories; some of the things are things I think I know until - you get the picture.
He breathes life into the undead.

If you want a nice selling point, imagine the undead from 30 Days actually gettign around and haunting the cities. They don't need Barrow; Barrow was just a killing grounds while everything else is just a playpen. And the vampires, they own the night in places like this, enough that they can feel free to play when the sun isn't rising. And the games they play, that's where Lebbon comes in. If someone else would have wirtten this, it would be a 2 -3 star book. BUt, with the talent here, it kicks in the 4 stars solidly.

It is a great read for those who want it.
you know who you are.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars, May 5, 2011
This review is from: 30 Days of Night: Fear of the Dark (Mass Market Paperback)
There really is no point in rehashing the plot or the creation of 30 Days of Night. If you are a horror fan, and you still have not heard of 30 Days of Night, whether it be the movie or the graphic novels, then you are an uneducated horror fan, to put it nicely. All I can say is that 30DON and I have a very special relationship.

I used to hate vampires in any way, shape or form. I hated with a passion the Anne Rice and Stephanie Meyer 'fairies' because they weren't real vampires. The earliest incarnation of a vampire that I can recall depicted them as savage, merciless killing machines, but since Bram Stoker came along and wrote Dracula, people latched onto the idea of a sexy, loving vampire- and frankly, it made me sick.

I have always been a much bigger fan of zombies that of vampires. There was nothing romantic about a zombie. The only thing a zombie wanted from a human being was to eat their flesh. Back in the day, all vampires wanted was to drink blood. That is a real vampire, in my opinion. But I digress.

This book further explores the universe that 30 Days of Night exists in, but it doesn't really do anything much different than what we have already been reading in the previous novels. There are good vampires, and there are bad vampires. Just as there were in Immortal Remains, in Rumors of the Undead, and just as there will be in many more novels to come I am sure. That is why I scored is 4 1/2 as opposed to 5. True, it isn't that much of a detraction from the overall enjoyment of the novel, but a writer of Tim Lebbon's status should have been able to add something truly original to the 30DON universe.

However, what Tim does bring us here is damn good. The story is interesting, especially the parts that deal with the relationship between Marty and Rose. It brings that sort of human connection to an inhuman universe, something that we desire from characters outside of Stella, Eben, and Dane (only one of whom has any part in this novel.) It's a graphic, gory book, which is perfect for me, as I am of the opinion that the more gore there is, the better. I recommend reading this if you are a fan of the 30D0N novels or graphic novels. It's a great timekiller.
