I suspect that this underrated movie will eventually be reconsidered and regarded as a minor classic.
And one large reason is Brian Reitzell's "score".
A soundtrack as uncompromising as this one has been a long time coming.
And, ironically, I also suspect that one of the reasons 30 Days did not succeed at appealing to a larger audience (aside from its story problems - more on that when the DVD is released) is due to the unnerving quality of this soundtrack

Yeah, I know there are loads of antecedents, from Forbidden Planet up to Dead Birds.
But this perfect soundscape blend of score/effects strikes me as unique: horror ambient; On Land under ice.

Perfectly unnerving and beautifully ugly. Glacial layers of electronic dissonance; harsh metallic grindings that seem oddly organic; menacing creaks, sharp spiky howlings and shrieks; ominous silences; percussive assaults; strange strange stuff.

It's all very bleak and foreboding.
Something like what you might hear at 3:30 in the morning, suddenly awake with an echo of a disturbing dream, and something over there in the corner...

Reitzell has rearranged the chronology on the CD, fashioning a suite that flows through its brief, sole moment of transcendence (just a shade of Alien3's final planctus) and on through its never quite resolved Underture.

I think this marvelous soundtrack may very well be a horror landmark.
At the very least, it sets a new standard.

Brian Reitzell - watch for him.

5.0 out of 5 stars for fans of the franchise and music lovers, August 27, 2008
This review is from: 30 Days of Night (Audio CD)
the film itself was highly anticipated and unfortunately came as something of a let down. the concept is very inspired, and the musical soundscape is very complimentary to the dark paranoia and violence. the soundtrack is a generous offering that will not dissappoint those with eclectic taste, and those who enjoy relxaing background music which is great for cold nights spent alone reading or simply resting. i have fallen asleep listening to this album many times, and i eagerly await potential sequels with continuing musical themes.

5.0 out of 5 stars 30 Days of Night movie soundtrack, September 7, 2011

This is an awesome instrumental soundtrack. Not only do I highly recommend seeing this movie, based on a graphic novel and is actually a dark/violent vampire flick, but the soundtrack perfectly reflects the intensity, adrenaline and horror of this film.
Filled with sporadic drums, chaotic beats, and some mellow, dark ambiance- this soundtrack is ideal for any fan of horror movies, or for something to put on your video game consoles to game to (say for zombie shooters and horror/sci-fi games).

Probably the scariest tracks that i have ever listened to. Totally true to the spirit of the movie. Haunting and memorable. I love it! Brian Reitzell is demented in the most creative way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, July 9, 2008
This review is from: 30 Days of Night (Audio CD)
This CD contains some amazing music. This is one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. Reitzell takes sounds and processes them until we have this brilliant and disturbing soundscape. I can't even describe it... the music just needs to speak for itself.

Buy this, put on headphones, and close your eyes. It will take you away.

I look forward to hearing more music from Brian Reitzell and all the fun toys he has in his studio.

A terrifying soundscape of the greatest vampire movie ever made. It's got all the really cool musical arrangements that are in the movie. The erriest and certainly the coolest is the opening track.
